Culture at Auckland Council

8.8
8.8 rating for Culture, based on 25 reviews
Please describe your company's culture both in the office and after hours. Let us know about the structure and hierarchy, cooperation and teamwork, and socialising amongst colleagues.
We have a friendly bunch of people and it is easy to make connections across all age groups, seniority levels, departments, etc. We often have morning teas for celebrations, and our department has a social committee that organises fun events for both during work hours and after work. This helps kaimahi connect on a personal level without the stresses of work.

Very social both in the office and after work. Those higher up are down to earth and chat with everyone from what I have seen so far.

Finding teams of social teams and similar interest groups are hard to find and navigate. In terms of culture, due to being online it takes a little longer to form those connections. However, everyone is very friendly and the culture of inclusion and diversity is high. Structure is in the process of transformation

AC is a diversity workplace with the people of different background. Everyone respects each other. We have regular after-work networking in the office. And we also have different themes of the culture activity.

From a graduate perspective, the culture at Auckland Council is incredibly supportive and welcoming. The company genuinely wants you to succeed in your role, and everyone is friendly and helpful, making me feel at home even though I’ve only been with the organization for a few months. In terms of structure and hierarchy, while there is a clear organizational framework, the environment encourages cooperation and teamwork across all levels. Although there are certain hierarchies and we often work with elected members, we remember that, at the end of the day, we are all just people doing our jobs. Treating each other with respect and kindness helps alleviate some of the stress that might come with working alongside these important decision-makers. Socializing among colleagues is great, with plenty of opportunities to connect both within and outside of work. After hours, there is a strong respect for personal time and an understanding that we all have priorities outside of work. The company encourages a healthy work-life balance and ensures that we take our breaks when needed, promoting overall well-being and job satisfaction.

Though we haven't known each other for long, the July Graduate cohort is really close! We have met for lunch and a quick round of pool in the games room most days, and we keep in touch regularly on both Teams and personal accounts. We're catch up after work this week to get to know each other better. Within the CXDS team, it seems to me that everyone is coming to work as friends- everyone is so kind and genuine!

In terms of structure, there's a hierarchy. We have 4 main areas of resource consents that we'll be rotating through, all in which have senior specialists from a variety of backgrounds. Each of these teams have a team leader, and above that is an overall manager/leader who we can all report to. We have a lot of people above myself and my other graduate friend that are taking care of us both! Though there is a hierarchy, its to do with experience and knowledge (of course). There doesn't feel to be any power imbalances though, and everyone above is incredibly supportive and caring!

A great number of networks to join and activities to participate in, even within CCOs. A lot of cooperation and teamworks.

Auckland Council's work culture is immaculate both in and out office. This is built through a strong structure which encapsulates small teams under a large departmental structure to complete their work which gets trickled up the chain to ultimately achieve the organisation's collective long-term goals.

Before the restructure, the policy department was known as Community & Social Policy (CSP). CSP/Policy is a great group with different personalities, strengths and creativity. We are all unique and intelligent. There are four teams within CSP/Policy - Culture & Diversity, regulatory practice, community Investment and Social Wellbeing. Tuesdays are our team day that is usually when we socialize amongst colleagues we don't usually see during the week. On Tuesdays, we have Team lunches, haapori (department meetings) which includes team shout outs, team chants, work presentations etc. It is a time where we come together collaborate and acknowledge our teams' achievements.

The culture in my department is excellent, I work two days in the office by choice and many others in my team are working flexible hours to fit around family and community commitments. The structure is significantly less hierarchical than many other workplaces I have experiences, and everyone likes to help out - there is no competition between coworkers. I am hopeful that this culture will continue despite our GM changing recently.

Everything is awesome around. People are friendly, team works well together.

the structure and hirarchy of my team to manager is excellent, however, I believe some input in decision making should be given to team leader and direct manager, not higher, as they are the people who know the process and work more intimately.

Its hard for me to connect with some of the people older with me in my team. Most of the social opportunities within Council for young people have been organized by myself or the other grads and not in an official council capacity.
