Diversity at Auckland Council

8.7
8.7 rating for Diversity, based on 25 reviews
Please provide further information on diversity with respect to women, ethnic minorities and LGBT. Please comment on issues such as recruitment, retention, promotion, child care, maternity leave, etc.
Council is doing great work to address pay gaps for women and pasifika staff members. There is training available for unconscious bias and lots of work has been done to support the inclusivity of kaimahi of all cultures and rainbow status. In my opinion, AC is a bit behind on the neuro-diversity front but those conversations are being had to support this community.

Lots of groups and teams. Some are new and will hopefully flourish.

I don't know much about the inner workings, but from the outside it seems that all communities are being celebrated throughout the year

From my understanding of only being at council for a few months is that they are committed to diversity within council and the recruitment process they were very enthusiastic about their commitment to it. Furthermore the retention of staff throughout council shows exemplifies to me that council continues to commit to diversity and allows staff to continue to feel comfortable in the office.

My perception of DEI at Auckland Council is positive! I think that because it is such a large company and is representative of Auckland as a City, it is inherently diverse! I have been made aware of the many representative groups within council that I have the opportunity to join, and there are many resources available to help educate and inform us.

Working with an extremely diverse team, and I'm happy to see the amount of women I'll be working with. I think the council has good engagement with constantly improving the diversity within positions. Lot's of women in leader/management positions. I think there's still always room for improvement, but I do see the efforts. There were lots of women in my graduate pool, and with varying backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities and such. Council just spent a whole lot of money bridging the pay gaps between women and men, and within POC. There's still quite a bit of work to be done in bridging pay gaps, but really good to see there is effort to fix this issue. Maternity leave seems really good, I haven't looked too much into it personally as I am not a soon-to-be mother, though the company seems really pro leave...

I have heard people saying that this organisation is the most diverse organisation that they've ever worked in. I believe this organisation is very diverse by the experience of colleagues that work with.

Auckland Council has a set of long-term goals they would like to achieve by the year 2050. One of goals is the commitment to a diverse and connected community across Auckland where all people in Auckland respect each other no matter what their background. Within the organisation, this has already been achieved starting at the recruitment process where staff are employed explicitly based on their expertise and skillset rather than background.

If we are referring to AC as a whole org, then the diversity aspect is good. However, within the policy department, diversity could be improved. there are only three Pacific Islanders working within policy with the majority being white. This could be due to recruitment (where not many people know that AC recruits graduates, I was the few that didn't know, I had to go on the AC website to find out). Perhaps next time, we could have AC guest speakers go to South Auckland and encourage students to apply.

My colleagues are from diverse backgrounds, and are respectful to everyone. I think more could be done to target those who we do not hire often - disabled and pacific peoples are particular groups that I think should be targeted for their lived experience and how that would enhance our work. Retention of Maori staff is not as strong as it could be. More needs to be done to make council a culturally safe workplace for kaimahi Maori or they will continue to go elsewhere. It is really good for maternity leave, and flexible returns for childcare purposes. This definitely feels like one of the few places where having a child would not significantly impact your career prospects.

I see banners and flags and stuff, I guess.

I have not seen any discrimination in my time at Council. out of around 30 graduate hires 5 were men. I know 2 of the graduates hired are LGBTQ+. This does not seem like an issue to me in any way at council.

Too committed to the point where I'm not sure if I obtained the job of my own merit or because I'm a particular race/gender.
