Application Process & Interviews at Babcock Australasia

The interview process was actually a really great experience for me. I had a very different process to the other graduates. I was a late intake, so I missed out on the graduate engagement sessions. I have to give a special shout to Gemma Ieraci. She was fantastic and incredibly helpful throughout the whole interview process. Although she was unable to have a phone interview with me, she ensured that I was still given the chance to have a video interview with Brendan. I am beyond grateful to have been given that opportunity because getting this job really has changed my life!

Like all hiring processes, it was fairly opaque. I didn't even know I had a job until something like two months after I had been told I wasn't selected. A little confusing.

Initial Phone Interview. Followed by a group interview where we were asked to complete team exercises. Followed by an individual interview and psychometric testing.

The interview process was very straightforward and easy to access. Babcock were very prompts in responses which was very helpful when applying at multiple companies.

It was a bit nerve wracking but fine. very organized.

The process was straightforward, and Babcock were quick to respond and provide updates along the way. I applied online, then received a phone call to set-up an online interview (via Microsoft Teams) with one of the recruitment team members. This interview ran for approximately 40 mins and covered both general questions and engineering-specific questions. Within a month of applying, I had received a job offer for Babcock's graduate program.

Interview Process and assessments were well structured and effectively managed.

A few hours group activities then an individual interview.

Very quick process, started with a casual phone call then a formal interview, the offer was made within a week.

There was an assessment centre. Had to fly myself there though

Started off with a call, which progressed into an in-person group meeting which had prospects work together to complete tasks and ended with another interview with a member of Babcock. Prospects also had to complete an IQ test.

Excellent and Easy to keep up with

My frustration with the hiring process was the lack of information regarding the work related to the job's role. Within Babcock there are multiple programs that all have different disciplines, alot of it sides more on the Mechanical than electrical and from my perspective this wasn't communicated well.

Started off with a phone call, the day after i submitted my resume, followed by an email for a group and one on one interview. The group interview had a few activates, such as working as a team to build a Lego ship, and a case study regarding the job we are applying for. The one-on-one interviews are a bit more personal explaining how and why we choose to study X specific Degree

The interview went for a long time however the company was great at keeping me updated both before and after the interview in progress and teaching me about the company. From memory there were no assessments prior to, only interview/phone call sessions.

After submitting my CV and cover letter, I received a call where I had the opportunity to discuss my aspirations, willingness to work overseas, and where I saw myself long term in procurement and supply chain management. From this point, I completed a psychometric test, before being offered a place at an assessment centre in an Auckland CBD office floor. The assessment involved working on building a physical model of a ship using instructions with other interviewees. Someone sat next to our table, taking notes of how we all interacted and contributed. After this point, we had to work as a team to describe how we would plan for the completion of a one-billion-dollar project. I stood up and represented my team, discussing numerous concepts relating to stakeholder management, health and safety, project management, and supply chain management. I answered questions after my presentation, including one that was posed previously to another candidate that I felt was answered incorrectly. Once the assessment was over, we all had a chance to spend time with our interviewer. I used the interview as an opportunity to sell myself, and my knowledge. I was asked questions about supply chain concepts and enjoyed what felt like a conversation with the hiring manager.

The interview process was initially phone call, with a following group interview. We were required to work as a team to build a lego model, this was observed by staff members at the table. Then we did one-on-one interviews with the HSEQ Manager. I enjoyed the process and was made to feel comfortable throughout. The assessments were fine, we were required to complete a physical assessment due to defence force requirements.

We had a half day talent engagement centre where you listened to presentations and performed some group tasks with other candidates. After lunch, you did a 15-minute interview with two employees (when I did it, it was one senior person and one current graduate). Following this, successful candidates were contacted via phone and there was ample engagement before our first day.

It was an initial online submission, phone call followed by an engagement centre where a group and individual activity/interview was done. The careers team were super engaging, actively involved and had our best interest at heard. Assessments were team activities (short like 2 x 30mins) and an individual interview

- general questions about why I wanted to work with Babcock - specific examples of when I've had to face difficult/complex situations and how I overcame/handled them. - an example of when I've showcased safety at a previous workplace. - what previous experience I have had in relation to project management.

I cannot recall. It was a long time ago

Questions pertaining to engineering processes. Questions about myself. I cannot remember exactly what else as it has been over a year since my interview.

Some questions related to technical, like how would I manage a schedule to more soft skills like how I accept and manage feedback that is given.

Past work experiences and a bit of knowledge on PM matters.

What was a lesson you learnt on a previous job? Tell me about a time where you failed, and how that helped you grow and develop professionally? Tell me about a time where you succeeded at a task, and how you approached it? What is your level of systems engineering? Can you please explain the engineering process/method?

questions were a good mix of personality-based questions and technical questions.

Why did i want to work for my company etc, and how I would approach a certain problem.

What am I good at, what I enjoy, what are my expectations.

Standard interview questions. One that caught me up was "What was a hard time I had to overcome"

Asked about degree, experiences, hobbies, and how I would work towards solving a problem I was unfamiliar with.

Many questions to do with my qualification and background

Why did you choose Project Management? What do you think the next 5 years look like? What are your future plans?

Most of the questions were around how I would handle specific situations and examples of where I have been in a similar situation and what I learnt from that.

I was first asked about my education, and grades. I expanded on what I had learned at university, and what else I would learn as the year progressed. In addition to questions about my education, I was asked what strategic sourcing meant, which I answered using a set of assumptions and concepts taught to me in university. I was also asked if I had any questions for the interviewer, which I used to learn more and demonstrate my interest in the company. For example, I asked my interviewer which Enterprise Recourse Planning (ERP) system Babcock uses.

During my in-person interview i was asked questions about my interest in the role, my background and to describe an environmental incident.

Things about the engineering product life cycle and scenario-based questions relating to how I deal with certain situations.

What I felt my strengths and weaknesses were, how I thought I could make an impact in the business, if I had any difficult challenges to overcome in the past and if so, how did I navigate them

Relevant ones, hard to say as it was a few months ago.

- I found that having a wide and extensive range of work experience examples for most of the questions really helped me. - learning more and fascinating yourself with the company - important! - learning about the company values - having a range of questions listed out that can be potential interview questions and practicing what info is the most important to be mentioned. - another helpful tip - I watched a lot of youtube videos and any videos relating to Babcock to give me a better understanding of the company and what they really do.

Know what your best accomplishments are and know how to present them. It's also important to know that Babcock are a defence company. Having at least a passing interest in the field will help significantly.

Prepare for common engineering interview questions with draft responses, covering topics such as design process, risk management and teamwork.

I recommend just being yourself and knowing that if they accept you then it is a great match.

Prepare for possible questions in advance so you can get the most out of the opportunity.

prepare well on how to talk about your experiences. refresh your understanding of fundamentals of technical concepts.

Be interested, do your research, show that you know what the company actually does.

Ask heaps of questions, use the interview as an opportunity to interview the business. Understand everything about them and the role you have applied for.

Practice interview questions. Mention experience that you have had which makes you stand out

I personally had a lot of nerves but pushing ahead anyway is best. Whether you get hired or not the experience will develop your skillset so either way you're better off.

Just Apply - But make sure to bring your best self forward and be honest. It could be what makes you stand out.

Just be yourself, and try to go out of your comfort zone meeting different people, because everyone is different and everyone has something to learn from each other

I would highly recommend starting at the company through the intern program to first get your foot in the door and understand more about the company and the work you could be doing. I would also recommend doing prior research so you know what other employees are saying about the company.

I recommend candidates applying to Babcock try to passionately sell themselves and their knowledge. They should be willing to discuss what sets them apart and tell a compelling story that explains how they have ended up in front of the interviewer. Candidates should be willing to use learned university knowledge and concepts to prove themselves in the assessment centre. They should also speak up where possible and take a lead in the groups they are assigned.

Be prepared to collaborate with others during the interview process and come with questions, Babcock encourages graduates/interns to always be curious. Put yourself out there and don't be afraid to get things wrong along the way.

Be ready to engage in group activities at the engagement centre. Don't be overbearing with the group be make sure your personality comes across in both these activities and your interview. Prepare for the interview by thinking of properties employers want in their staff (having resilience, being able to take constructive feedback, taking initiative, etc.) and brainstorming good examples of times where you've shown those properties. Do not try to predict the questions as there will always be something that stumps you if you try that; think of scenarios you can tailor to multiple situations.

Yes and that is to communicate and converse, be involved and actively engage in the activities and interviews as that's what stands out to the careers team.

Have some questions you would like to know about what your role may entail, or anything about the company that you would like to know about. It would be helpful to do some background research about the company so you can find something that interests you, and you can talk about that during the interview. You could ask the interviewers about what they enjoy the most about their role and working for the company. Ask about what the day to day responsibilities look like for your role.
