As a junior structural engineer at BCD, my role involves a mix of design, analysis, and project coordination. On a day-to-day basis, I work closely with senior engineers and other construction industry professionals to develop structural designs for various projects. I often collaborate with architects and project managers to find cost-effective, client-oriented solutions that integrate well with the overall project. My responsibilities include preparing calculation packages, sketches, specifications, and reports, conducting site visits to monitor construction progress, and addressing any technical issues that arise. This combination of hands-on design work, teamwork, and problem-solving makes my role both challenging and rewarding.
I get to work on a variety of projects and get a good mix of office and field work.
You run through calculations and sketches everyday. As a new graduate, you are often tasked with helping out around the office as well eg: filling up the fridge, running errands etc

Engineering Consulting
BCD Group is an award-winning consultancy specialising in Planning, Surveying, Geotech, Civil, Structural and Fire Engineering services.
The workplace culture and team camaraderie is awesome! Everyone at BCD group is very supportive. Anyone on the team doesn't hesitate to put time aside to help each other out, whether it be taking the time to teach someone a new skill or spending a few minutes helping to work through complex design challenges.
The people. Everyone is supportive and they have an effective graduate growth structure
Hands-on practical experience.
The relaxed office environment, you can wear whatever you are comfortable in and everyone is friendly.
With my 1 year of work experience and 3 years of internship experience, I have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, from residential buildings to commercial structures. This diversity significantly enhances my skill set. Being relatively early in my career, I benefit from the mentorship and guidance of more experienced engineers, which accelerates my learning curve and professional development. Working at BCD, I find the consultancy environment dynamic and rewarding. I can rapidly gain hands-on experience and take on responsibilities, greatly contributing to my professional growth. Additionally, BCD fosters a collaborative work culture, allowing me to work closely with architects, project managers, and other engineers, enhancing my teamwork and communication skills.
As a junior engineer, I have less influence over major project decisions and often handle more routine tasks, which can be less fulfilling compared to more creative or strategic work. However, this is more a reflection of my career stage rather than company policies or structures.
Reviewers are often times very busy. It can take a few hours to a few days to get a review back.
When there aren't any jobs to jump on while waiting, it gets boring. But that rarely happens
The extra hours are required to get site reports out quickly.
Not very much to complain about at BCD, sometimes there is a lack of vehicles or equipment when everyone goes to site.
