Pros and cons of working at CIMIC Group

Pros

  • Delivering major projects that shape cities and impact the lives of those around me. Being part of UGL/CIMIC has given me the chance to work on the Cross River Rail project which is helping to define the future of Brisbane.

  • I feel that I am working with professionals that I can learn from and that they will push me to take on new and challenging opportunities. Also treated me with respect.

  • The people I have worked with have provided me with valuable experience, even as an undergrad and treated me with respect and as a proper employee despite my experience. I've been provided with plenty of opportunities at various types of projects and have been surrounded by a great team each time.

  • I've been provided with a lot of opportunities and have felt supported to some degree in every role I've worked in. The female representation and leadership is also higher than what I've seen from other contractors of the same level

  • It gives me an international perspective of working in this industry. I feel so respected to work as a woman in here, as they have created a woman in construction group to gather the female power in the company.

  • The large amount of opportunities to gain experience in different areas and projects due to the great portfolio of work and diversity of the company.

Cons

    • Usual office hours and pay is great to match hours worked. However, the hours on site can be much longer and the domestic site allowance does not cover all the overtime that is worked.

    • Not enough resources/people to get job done successfully. May need to do overtime to get the job complete.

    • Working in such a large company it can feel like being a small cog in a large machine. It can be hard to navigate the business and define a career path.

    • Transitioning between projects is not always smooth

    • Although rotations are stated as part of your graduate program, I found it very difficult to get the managers to allow me to rotate into other departments to pursue other opportunities.

    • Office culture is lacking, maybe due to COVID but unsure has haven't been here for long enough
