Our purpose is to put our energy where it matters, to decarbonise the New Zealand energy sector and promote #changematters. We are passionate about our mission and proud to have a tribe of people behind us working towards a common purpose. With such an ambitious goal, you might ask yourself – how does this graduate opportunity help support a better, cleaner NZ?
Our Graduate Programme is committed to providing a great foundation where you’ll be trained, supported, and mentored along with providing exciting challenges for you to reach your full potential. You will work with passionate members of the Contact Energy team who are excited to share their knowledge of the energy industry with you, we can guarantee no two days will be the same!
Our Graduate Programme commences in February 2023 and is an 18 month rotational programme. Graduates will complete 3 x 6 month rotations across three areas of the business unit they’ll be working in. At the conclusion of the programme you will transition into a permanent role within our Generation & Trading, Development or Corporate Finance business units.
This Graduate Programme is well suited to those with a growth mindset who relish the opportunity to tackle complex problems and are looking to build a well-rounded base of technical and commercial experience in New Zealand’s energy markets. This opportunity is the platform from which you can launch your career and chart a course through the energy transition here in New Zealand and the rest of the world. You will get a well-rounded base of relevant experience in a company that is actively investing in renewable energy.
Our graduate role in Trading will get exposure to our wholesale part of the business, developing an understanding of the gas and electricity market and the commercial operations of buying and selling energy in NZ’s energy markets. You will also get exposure to our development and finance business units to learn how we build long term Strategy and how we manage commodity risks. For this opportunity, we’re open to applicants with any degree, provided you have a commercial and analytical mindset. This opportunity is based in Wellington.
Diversity of thought is vital to our success along with the right behaviours so it is important to just be yourself. We can teach you the skills, it is more about attitude and team fit for us. We are looking for well-rounded applicants with a can-do and positive mindset.

Our strategy is to lead Aotearoa's decarbonisation by growing renewable development and creating outstanding customer experiences.
The culture is very authentic and welcoming, both in and outside of office hours.
Flexible working hours with emphasis on getting the job done rather than unproductive work.
The people are super friendly and supportive, flexible working arrangements, interesting work.
You're encouraged to block out a work hour of your week in your calendar and use that to focus on self-learning.
I have found myself as a graduate in meetings and bumping into our CEO, CFO and heads of different business areas a lot. Everyone has time for you, no matter the question.
Sometimes not enough work for entry level and sometimes work can be heavy at times.
Not super social workplaces, as most people based in major cities work from home.
Not very transparent with career development, salary bands per job etc.
My first couple of rotations were a bit unorganised, not much planned work.
There is a lack of transparency around career progression, especially regarding pay bands and what is needed to move from one level to the next.
