Come join us - we need your energy to help decarbonise Aotearoa and safeguard the planet for future generations to enjoy.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We have exciting opportunities for students to join our Geothermal Generation Team based at Wairākei Power Station in Taupō this summer! You might be wondering what Geothermal energy is, it’s a low carbon energy source, heat and fluid from deep in the earth is harnessed through wells and piped to our station to turn turbines that generate electricity – how cool is that? We have six geothermal power stations in the central North Island but our Wairākei plant is the first geothermal plant of its kind in the world and is an iconic symbol of New Zealand’s electricity generation system.

What might you be doing? Well, you’ll spend the summer learning about our how we operate and manage our geothermal plant, assets and resources in a way that ensures the long term sustainability of our geothermal reservoirs. You will work closely with one of our operational teams (Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Reservoir) and get involved with a range of work experiences which will boost your understanding of the geothermal industry. You’ll get a first hand look at our how Geothermal stations operate and there will be a strong emphasis on identifying improvements in technology and processes to support reliable, efficient, economical and safe operations.

We are seeking applications from students ideally in their second year (and above) studying the following degrees;

We can equip you with the skills needed to thrive in this internship and beyond. What truly matters to us is inclusivity and diversity of thought, so it is important to just be yourself! Throughout the internship, you’ll have assigned tasks, responsibilities and projects to complete. You’ll also be enrolled in an online learning pathway with eLearning modules to complete over the summer, and you’ll have a dedicated buddy to help support you along the way.

Te Tākinatanga | Our Story

Pros and cons of working at Contact Energy

Pros

  • The culture is very authentic and welcoming, both in and outside of office hours.

  • Flexible working hours with emphasis on getting the job done rather than unproductive work.

  • The people are super friendly and supportive, flexible working arrangements, interesting work.

  • You're encouraged to block out a work hour of your week in your calendar and use that to focus on self-learning.

  • I have found myself as a graduate in meetings and bumping into our CEO, CFO and heads of different business areas a lot. Everyone has time for you, no matter the question.

Cons

    • Sometimes not enough work for entry level and sometimes work can be heavy at times.

    • Not super social workplaces, as most people based in major cities work from home.

    • Not very transparent with career development, salary bands per job etc.

    • My first couple of rotations were a bit unorganised, not much planned work.

    • There is a lack of transparency around career progression, especially regarding pay bands and what is needed to move from one level to the next.
