How will you be supported?

You'll kickstart your career at Datacom with the Talent Elevator! The Talent Elevator takes experiential learning to the next level. We fly our cohort to one of our HQs in New Zealand where you'll get to know your peers and complete training to refine your professional skills. You'll also become familiarised with Datacom's operating model, vision and values and have plenty of opportunity to meet our leadership team. Last but not least, you'll have fun! The second week of the Talent Elevator will take place back in your home location. You'll continue your learning including meeting your team and working through a customised Specialisation Training Plan. From week 3 your induction will be complete, and you will be able to apply all of your great new skills to support your team and leads. Our Program of support is12 months in duration. We have spent time carefully curating a journey that balances ongoing learning with mentoring and cohort connection. Our goal is to ensure you have all of the resources and tools to navigate the early stages of your career with Datacom as you grow to become a future leader!

Where will I start my career?

There are many opportunities across our business, some (but not all) include

Developer

  • Installing, coding, testing and maintaining new or modified systems software.
  • Preparing documentation for use by Systems Design Programmers and Operations staff.
  • Analysing and rectifying operating systems problems.

Intelligent Workspace

  • Assisting new users with their IT hardware collection and setup
  • Ensuring new equipment is up to date and deployment ready prior to release to customers
  • Using tools and processes to deliver services to customers
  • Deploying hardware such as Laptops and Mobile phones to customers.

Cloud

  • Supporting Cloud platform customers and Datacom cloud services focusing on automation and continuous improvement within the agreed Datacom frameworks
  • Uplifting Cloud automation and delivery maturity across Datacom leveraging agile/DevOps methodologies
  • Enhancing the Datacom managed public cloud services solutions by applying an ‘automate where possible’ approach

Business Applications

  • Assisting in the design and development of high-quality business solutions.
  • Providing evaluations of customer's business needs comprising differing product options
  • Analysing existing programs
  • Coding, tests/debugs

Software Engineering

  • Monitoring the performance and availability of systems hardware and software
  • Analysing and rectifying operating systems problems
  • Preparing documentation for use by Systems Design Programmers and Operations staff
  • Installing, coding, testing and maintaining new or modified systems software.

Advisory

  • Analysing and delivering business process initiatives
  • Meeting with user groups to gather and analyse end user requirements
  • Analysing workflow to create process maps

My day to day work consists of front end software development and participating in sprint ceremonies such as retros, planning, refinements, and standups. I collaborate with the other developers on my team, and work back and forth with testers to fix bugs and ensure our work is up to standard.

Pros and cons of working at Datacom New Zealand

Pros

  • Everyone is friendly, open to new ideas, willing to train, gives time for training and Lots of opportunities to seek new pathways Rewarding training paths Nicole my recruiter is amazing in helping with the transition and introducing me to the new rotation's leader

  • Flexibility and WFH, the best thing is being able to choose where I work from there is no requirement or force to be placed in the office, they understand the times have changed and they have moved with it not against also no Egos everyone is fair kind and reasonable

  • There are lots of interesting people to meet and learn from

  • Broad mix of projects to work on

  • The culture of the company and how supportive and collaborative my team members and manager are

Cons

    • Waiting for access to the customer site, but I can understand that it will take a long time to get software install

    • Slight disconnect with employees

    • The pay could be better. Sometimes I have to work overtime which can be difficult to work around my personal life

    • At the moment there is nothing I can say that is worst about the company

    • Lots of screen time
