How did you come to work for Degnan?

For my university degree, a requirement was to do work experience. I heard about Degnan through a friend in the field, so I walked into the head office with my resume and cover letter and requested an interview for a cadetship.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is the dynamic work environment. I work with different people daily, and the job constantly changes and progresses. After one project is finished, I get to work on a new one with a completely different design, and different people, and it’s really exciting.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received from a colleague?

“First, look for the answers yourself.”

This advice I received has taught me to use initiative, which has allowed me to think for myself and progress in this role.

I had no prior engineering work experience before starting at Degnan as a cadet.

My job interview was relaxed. I was asked questions about my skills, attitude, and goals. I felt lucky to talk to people who seemed interested in helping me achieve those goals.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I plan to be a highly skilled project engineer with enough experience to work towards becoming a senior project engineer.

Have your expectations of work changed since starting at Degnan?

I had no expectations before starting at Degnan. I had no idea what it would be like and was prepared to go along for the ride.

What would you say to a recent graduate seeking employment opportunities?

Go to the office of the company you’d like to work for and present yourself because that will give you a better chance.

I’d also say it’s essential to know your strengths and weaknesses, so you can look for a job that either highlights your strengths or allows you to work on your weaknesses
