Michael James

2015 Technical Graduate at Hewlett Packard Enterprise New Zealand

Bachelor of Engineering Science at Australian National University (ANU)

I came in with a technical background and not an extensive IT background. However, the ability to grasp technical concepts, and apply my limited technical skills and knowledge to a variety of situations, has certainly come in handy.

What is your role at HPE?

I am in a Technical Consultancy role within HPE’s Software division, currently on a project at a government department in Canberra. I'm responsible for understanding our customers' requirements and assisting in creating and delivering technology solutions that meet their business needs.

What do you like best about your job?

One of the best parts of my job is developing the skills and knowledge that I'll need for future roles simply by doing my job well. It's also been great to be able to learn from the really smart and down-to-earth people on my team.

What skills have you gained in this role?

In the short time I've been in the Graduate Program I've already gained several technical skills, predominantly in the use of HP products such as CSA, Operations Orchestration, and Propel. I've also had the opportunity to complete the ITIL Foundations certificate in Service Management, which is recognized all over the world.

What skills did you already have that have proven useful?

I came in with a technical background and not an extensive IT background. However, the ability to grasp technical concepts, and apply my limited technical skills and knowledge to a variety of situations, has certainly come in handy. Another one would be problem-solving, for sure - most of the things I've been assigned involve a lot of problem-solving, especially when trying to understand a new tool or product.
