Holland Beckett Law, in conjunction with Pukeroa Oruawhata Group, introduced a summer clerk programme in 2022 for students who whakapapa to one of the 6 koromatua of Ngāti Whakaue.

This is a great opportunity for law students who are in their last two years of study to work in one of the Bay of Plenty’s top law firms alongside some of the Bays’ best solicitors.

Our Ngāti Whakaue Internship Programme will run at the same time as our annual summer clerk programme over the university summer holidays. As an intern at Holland Beckett Law, you will get to experience real-world work, have ongoing technical and soft skill training, meet some great people and have all the benefits of working in a large provincial firm.

Our aim is for each of our interns to have a great summer, get to know our firm, our people and our culture and values.

Benefits

We aim to be an employer of choice for the most talented people.

As a summer intern, on top of a competitive salary, you’ll receive:

  • Paid Christmas leave
  • Invitations to social events throughout the summer, allowing you to meet other staff and summer interns
  • Invitations to team and firmwide Christmas events
  • Team community days
  • Involvement in our sports teams
  • Attendance at professional development/leadership webinars and seminars
  • One-on-one time with Partners

Our interview process

I feel that I am given opportunities which challenge me but that I am surrounded by a lot of support. This makes my work interesting and I feel that I am always learning and developing my skills.

I love the corporate work I do and find it really interesting. I also feel like I am doing a good job which gives me confidence and appreciate the feedback I receive. I don't feel stressed or overworked/overwhelmed but still feel challenged and am learning more with every task I do. It's the perfect balance!

Pros

  • The team is really relaxed and easy to work with. The firm is social and there is lots to do/get involved in.

  • Good culture and team support. Good opportunities to learn and grow.

  • The team and workplace culture. I feel very lucky to be working with colleagues who are highly skilled at what they do and who are committed to supporting the learning and development of those around them.

  • The workplace culture and opportunities are given to you to excel.

  • The culture, everyone gets along very well.

Cons

    • Lawyers can have quite strong personalities and sometimes people will clash

    • Some assistance and supervision from seniors would be great (especially during the first few weeks of work),

    • At times there is some tension when people become stressed.

    • Nothing.
