Get a head start on work experience with us during your break. Apply your theory to real-world challenges, learn from the pros in renewable energy, and see some of Tasmania’s coolest renewable assets.

Work experience is getting more valuable as the recruitment market heats up. Give your career a kick-start with us, and prepare for your future career in renewable energy. Whilst Australia is undergoing a dynamic transformation, we’re already leading the charge, as the nation’s largest producer of renewable energy. We want to hear from aspiring engineers with innovative ideas to help us progress even further.

We support applications from all members of our community for equitable access to our employment opportunities. This includes discussing workplace flexibility in all our vacancies, to ensure we can attract the best candidates and accommodate individual needs, differences, disabilities and working arrangements, even in ways we may not have thought of. Our merit-based recruitment practices are founded on building diversity by fostering an inclusive, flexible, and equitable workplace.

About the role

On our vacation program, you will gain practical experience, working side-by-side with the renewable energy pros. We will support you in working on real projects, both in an office environment and out in the field. This is valuable experience in preparing for graduate roles once you complete your degree.

You will create a network with our experienced mentors, who will support you to apply your academic theory from the classroom to a large scale industry environment. Why not come and test out whether the renewable industry is for you? We know you’ll love it as much as we do.

Our Vacation program runs for a period of 13 weeks, starting on Monday 20 November 2024 to Friday 16 February 2025.

Pros and cons of working at Hydro Tasmania

Pros

  • Interesting work, the company values helping the community, work/life balance, remuneration

  • Great mix of on-site and off-site work. I am the sort of person that enjoys getting their hands dirty and working with the site crews. Big cool assets from a large variety of manufacturers, so there's always something unusual to solve.

  • Encouragement and support for graduates working on major projects with other staff. Large focus on development opportunities with a training budget for grads each FY.

Cons

    • Hydro Tasmania has a very steep learning curve in regard to its systems and processes which can take a new starter a while to get their head around.

    • It’s a big, old business with a lot of legacy issues and it’s sometimes overwhelming. It’s hard to see and implement improvement because there is a lot of people who have been around for a long time.

    • The company doesn't have a strong knowledge base for reference, forum to whats happening in the whole organisation level, and a lack of documentation/content.
