They are quite accessible. Upper managers who do the final performance reviews are a little bit too detached to make a realistic assessment. Team leaders and mentors however are great for learning from and give good/fair reviews (although this seems to factor less)

Managers are easy to contact and communicate with. Praise and recognition tend to be very situational, dependent on the project assigned as well as ability to impact the company.

There are performance reviews conducted on a periodic basis, There are bi-weekly meetings with team leads to discuss how each team member is going.
