My days are always different depending on the current issues with the plant. I have a range of projects that I work on and a mix of office work, lab work and being hands on in the plant.

The amount of varied work is satisfying and the fact that graduates rotate through the business every year is cool because you get to learn about the business as a whole.

Very interesting, fast paced and stimulating work. Wide variety of work opportunities. (Both a positive and a negative, often work is out of scope but you get an opportunity to learn a new skill.)

Pros and cons of working at Ixom NZ

Pros

  • Working with awesome people who are always willing to help each other out. Lots of development opportunities for graduates

  • Great work environment, helpful colleagues

  • Industry leader in the chemical industry. Very varied work, no two days are the same.

  • The people who work here. They are all very friendly and welcoming. Always open to answering your questions.

  • In under 6 months I have been involved in many different aspects of chemical manufacturing. This has been a steep learning curve but a great way to fast track the start of my career. I'm really looking forward to future rotations within the company as well to broaden my knowledge.

  • Opportunity to be involved in high level projects and communicate with employees of all levels.

Cons

    • Trans tasman teams can make communicating difficult and unclear processes or responsibilities for some people.

    • Too many meetings for managers which makes it hard to discuss with them about jobs and projects.

    • Barely any pay rise given to graduates. Graduates should be getting the biggest pay rises with each year of experience, as we start off with such low salaries.

    • A well-established company means that bad habits have been well-formed and people are hesitant to change despite them seeing the obvious positives of change.
