Being an Intern at John Holland is a great opportunity to kick start your career and apply what you've learnt at university to the real working environment. It's an exciting opportunity to gain insight into what it is like working for John Holland and start developing your technical and soft skills.

Building in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane

  • Construction Management
  • Quantity Surveying

Infrastructure in Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, Cairns, and Sunshine Coast

  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Environmental Science/Sustainability

Our Internship Program

  • We offer our interns a structured program, which includes:
  • 12 weeks of practical work experience
  • Ongoing support by a manager and mentor
  • Formal learning and development programs
  • Networking opportunities across a diverse project-based business

To be eligible for this role you will be:

  • A penultimate year student
  • Completing your degree in 2021
  • Available to commence on 23 November 2020
  • Majoring in Construction Management OR Quantity Surveying, Civil or Electrical Engineering and Environmental Science/Sustainability
  • Australian / New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident

As a Site Engineer, my daily activities include coordinating with subcontractors to ensure timely product delivery within budget constraints. I review design specifications to ensure that civil work adheres to these standards, and I collaborate with the design team to address any issues that may arise. Additionally, I manage quality documentation, purchase orders, and invoices. I also plan for upcoming weeks, oversee concrete orders, verify reinforcement, and handle procurement tasks.

Pros and cons of working at John Holland

Pros

  • The best thing about working at John Holland is being able to work in projects that create meaningful changes in our society as well as work with like-minded people.

  • The culture around the team and the graduate program is amazing. Heaps of networking opportunities with the other graduates which is great.

  • The culture and support from People. The ample opportunities that the company provides to try new projects or to try different roles.

  • Wide range of projects that leave a lasting positive impact on the community.

  • Exposure to different projects and industries that I am exposed to in my normal day-to-day life.

Cons

    • The expectation to work very long hours permanently, on site, throughout the entire project.

    • Limited mobility across different teams/departments, people tend to specialise in an area and stay in the same role in their career instead of exploring different pathways.

    • It can be hard to transition if you are not used to being autonomous with your workload/tasks.

    • Extensive hours you will need to commit – early starts and late finishes, especially if based on site.

    • Company is so massive that you can get lost as another number.
