Kia ora,

It’s a pivotal time to join our organisation and we're searching for our next generation of influential and inspiring leaders to develop with us.

KiwiRail is a purpose-driven State-Owned Enterprise with a commercial mandate. We run our business efficiently and effectively while delivering significant economic benefits through taking trucks off the road, reducing carbon emissions and road maintenance costs, easing congestion in cities, and making roads safer.

We have electrical and mechatronics engineering graduate roles available, based in Auckland and Wellington.

What are we offering?

  • An exciting and comprehensive 2-year rotational programme which will see you pushed out of your comfort zone and growing toward your full potential
  • Competitive starting salary, to be regularly reviewed
  • A full business induction including meeting key manager and visiting KiwiRail sites across Aotearoa
  • Senior management mentoring and a buddy from within the business
  • 5 weeks annual leave and a host of other great benefits and rewards

During the course Programme, you will:

  • Assist with project work as determined by your manager relating to your qualification, based on the needs of the business
  • Provide generalist support in the delivery of projects and professional assignments
  • Develop strong working relationships with key stakeholders across the team to assist with project concepts, design, and implementation

CPAD: As a Graduate Engineer within the Capital Projects and Asset Development (CPAD) team, you will be immersed into the lifecycle phases of some of our major projects. In Auckland, we have multiple programmes of work including Wiri to Quay Park, Papakura to Pukekohe and supporting parts of the City Rail Link Project and Rolling Stock Procurement. In the Lower North Island, we have the Wellington Metro Upgrade Programme and Project iReX (our new ferries and terminal infrastructure).

Rail Operations: As a Graduate Engineer within Rail Operations, you will be directly supporting our strong and diverse multi-discipline rail Engineering (rail-track, civil, structures, water, geotechnical, traction electrical, signals, control systems) to deliver professional services to a vast portfolio of rail infrastructure renewal and upgrade projects.

What you’ll need

  • Diploma or Degree in Mechatronics or Electrical Engineering
  • Have recently graduated (within the last two years) or be graduating this year with a degree
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to build strong relationships quickly and effectively
  • A curious, proactive, and innovative mindset
  • Must be a New Zealand Citizen or Resident

Graduate Success Stories

  • Graduate stories
I have learned the basics of rail and all its different components. How rail, road and ferries all tie in together to support our economy and how much of an environmental impact rail provides on helping the NZ government to meet its carbon emissions goals.

I think that the flexibility of the graduate position will help me truly understand what I actually enjoy. Studying something is often very different to working in that respective area.
