At Nexia, we don’t just talk about it. We nurture it. Cultivate it. Unlock it. We bring it to life, not just for you, but with you. That’s the promise we make to our clients, and it’s the same promise we make to our great people. We do this because we believe in pushing the boundaries of personal potential and helping our people leave their mark on the world.

While we’re in the business of accountancy and advice, we’re actually in the business of people—because we believe that when great people are aligned, great things happen. We are incredibly proud of our values-based culture – prioritising our values over profit margins to make a positive impact.

The role

We are currently looking to expand our team and provide a fantastic opportunity for a first year university student or high school leaver who is excited about building a long-term career at Nexia.

Our Cadetship experience will provide you with the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients in a variety of industries, gaining valuable exposure to hands-on learning while completing your accounting degree. Our team of accounting experts will mentor and provide guidance throughout your career, both technically and socially.

This is a full-time position, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm Monday to Friday, commencing in January / February 2025 and your studies will need to fit around your work schedule.

Specifically, some of the tasks that you will be trained in and eventually take ownership of include:

  • completing basic to large tax returns;
  • completing relevant schedules and working papers;
  • calculating capital gains and losses;
  • checking and forwarding assessment notices, provisional tax notices, and variations;
  • processing transactions via the appropriate accounting system;
  • completing accounts to the review stage, ensuring all balance sheet items are reconciled and an analytical review is performed for profit and loss statements; and
  • prepare, calculate, and reconcile asset registers and depreciation

  • be a current Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident.

In addition, you will:

  • Be an enthusiastic team player;

I would say I am very satisfied with my work. Since starting at Nexia during University I have worked on everything ranging from FBT, payroll, GST, management accounting annual compliance and more.

I work with Larry from BA & Garvin from Superannuation. We do a lot of work for clients who are nearing retirement. These clients have businesses that ... Nevermind... I work in BA.

Pros and cons of working at Nexia Sydney

Pros

  • The best thing about working at Nexia is the supportive environment in the division that encourages both personal/professional growth.

  • My work hours are very flexible and I have always been encouraged to start early as I am a morning person.

  • The people, at Nexia the relationships you build is something truly extraordinary and will last a lifetime.

  • I started at Nexia as a cadet just over 2 and a half years ago. I am now finished University and I am an Intermediate.

  • There’s a lot of training provided especially for graduates/junior staff.

Cons

    • I really don't like working past 5pm. I understand the need to do so at times to complete client work.

    • Some of the work can be repetitive but this is to be expected at any firm.

    • The workload is quite heavy too during the busy season.

    • I wish I got a bit more mentorship in my early days. I felt a bit on my own without my direct manager guiding me

    • The hours are quite long the more senior you get. However, it is rewarding at the end of it all.
