Trade student life for a life in New Zealand’s capital markets

Do you have a ‘can do’ attitude and passion for supporting the growth of New Zealand businesses?

NZX are on the hunt for motivated, capable graduates from all backgrounds who are ready to get stuck into a career where no two days are the same - working amongst a diverse team of highly motivated, hard-working professionals.

At NZX we offer a unique opportunity for young professionals to be part of the heart of New Zealand’s capital markets, working in a range of business areas across New Zealand’s financial and commodity markets.

Why NZX? Not only do you join a team where you deliver real work from day one, we’ll support you with strong industry knowledge and training at every step - arming you with a solid set of skills and relationships to accelerate your future within the industry.

Our Graduate Programme

“You’re not just a ‘grad’, you’re a valued team member doing meaningful work that matters to our economy. You will gain hands-on experience in operating our markets for New Zealand and we’ll support you every step throughout the programme through mentorship, different learning opportunities and establishing a strong career."

This year we are offering roles based either in our Wellington or Auckland offices across the breadth of NZX Group within Capital Markets, Risk and Compliance, IT and Funds management teams.

This is a two year graduate programme where you will have the option to rotate to another part of the business in your second year.

Benefits of the programme

We are all about building our staff to be the best they can be. As a part of the graduate programme, we offer formal and informal opportunities to help you grow:

Study options – we offer graduates the opportunity to complete your Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Professional Legal Studies course – we’ll support your chosen pathway, cover costs, and provide study leave.

Other benefits include:

  • Professional memberships – we cover the cost for you to join the Law Society, CAANZ, Institute of Financial Professionals – a great way for you to build your wider network in the industry and attend industry events that will grow your network and your knowledge.
  • Site visits - NZX is at the heart of the wider financial markets’ ecosystem. To help you learn more about that ecosystem, we organise visits to some of key relationships like banks, brokers, or issuers.
  • Mentorship – you’ll be assigned a buddy who has been through the grad programme and an executive sponsor from our senior team, who will help you understand the business and to build relationships at the most senior level.
  • A warm welcome – NZX is a social place and there are many opportunities for you to get to know your workmates. Whether it’s a casual summer BBQ for graduates or joining an indoor sports team, board game club or quiz night, you’ll find a place you belong.

Culture & vibe

NZX offers a vibrant, supportive, and open working environment. Join us and you'll become part of a culture that nurtures talent, embraces diversity, and rewards outstanding performance. Our people are what makes NZX a great place to work. We encourage creative thinking and innovation from people across the organisation, no matter their job title. We work together and support each other, cultivating a great atmosphere and rewarding working environment.

About you

NZX is looking for bright, capable people to help deliver exciting opportunities in New Zealand’s capital markets. If you have recently achieved or are in the final year of study for a Bachelor of Commerce, Laws, Software Engineering, Computer or Data Science, or an Arts degree with a significant mathematics, science or commerce component, we’d love to hear from you.

While we are keen to hear from graduates that have studied in these areas, we also welcome diversity of thought, skill set and academic background. If you are not sure you fit the bill but the opportunity to work for NZX excites you, it would be great to hear from you.

My role is managing the back-end, operational side of the market. My day-to-day includes tracking latest announcements, corporate actions, and trading events for listed companies. These tasks are managed across my team and as most things need to be done within market hours every day is different and can get exciting.

I am still learning the ins and outs of my role. So far, I have been satisfied as I feel I am adequately challenged in day-to-day tasks and timeframes, yet I feel mostly capable to complete them. When I am in need of assistance my team is very approachable for me to ask questions.

Pros and cons of working at NZX

Pros

  • The ability to learn new things every day.

  • The best thing about working at NZX is how welcoming and inclusive everyone is. All staff, no matter what level of the organisation, are genuinely interested and supportive of the Graduates. This results in many opportunities to gain exposure and learn from both your own team, and other areas of the business, as well has having a commitment to career progression.

  • The support that I have received since the first day of my employment. The work environment at NZX encourages my growth and has supported my development in my professional career.

  • Interesting to be at the centre of the New Zealand stock market. Everyone is very friendly and all levels of management are open to chatting or helping you out.

  • The regular social events, and the flexible work + life balance offered

Cons

    • Sometimes working under subsidiary companies feels different, as companies have different approaches to applying policy. There is limited rotation on the Grad Programme and the rotation term is yearly.

    • We are in a temporary office right now, so I haven't had the chance to build relationships with many people as much as I would have hoped by now. I am sure it will happen when we return to our normal office though.

    • Days when there is a large amount of work to complete can get very busy and have to work late to finish everything before market closes or end of day.

    • Sometimes the work can be slightly mundane.

    • Being new to the industry it can be quite hard learning about the numerous different business functions.
