My role is managing the back-end, operational side of the market. My day-to-day includes tracking latest announcements, corporate actions, and trading events for listed companies. These tasks are managed across my team and as most things need to be done within market hours every day is different and can get exciting.

I am still learning the ins and outs of my role. So far, I have been satisfied as I feel I am adequately challenged in day-to-day tasks and timeframes, yet I feel mostly capable to complete them. When I am in need of assistance my team is very approachable for me to ask questions.

Pros and cons of working at NZX

Pros

  • The ability to learn new things every day.

  • The best thing about working at NZX is how welcoming and inclusive everyone is. All staff, no matter what level of the organisation, are genuinely interested and supportive of the Graduates. This results in many opportunities to gain exposure and learn from both your own team, and other areas of the business, as well has having a commitment to career progression.

  • The support that I have received since the first day of my employment. The work environment at NZX encourages my growth and has supported my development in my professional career.

  • Interesting to be at the centre of the New Zealand stock market. Everyone is very friendly and all levels of management are open to chatting or helping you out.

  • The regular social events, and the flexible work + life balance offered

Cons

    • Sometimes working under subsidiary companies feels different, as companies have different approaches to applying policy. There is limited rotation on the Grad Programme and the rotation term is yearly.

    • We are in a temporary office right now, so I haven't had the chance to build relationships with many people as much as I would have hoped by now. I am sure it will happen when we return to our normal office though.

    • Days when there is a large amount of work to complete can get very busy and have to work late to finish everything before market closes or end of day.

    • Sometimes the work can be slightly mundane.

    • Being new to the industry it can be quite hard learning about the numerous different business functions.
