The tasks that I undertake and the projects I have been given, have given me a real chance to challenge myself and prove my abilities.

What's your job about?

Prysmian Group is the global leader in the cable industry. Headquartered in Milan with over 80 plants worldwide the group manufactures and sells energy and telecom cables and systems.

I have joined Prysmian Group at the beginning of 2017 on the Graduate Program, which is a global group of 40-50 graduates. The program allows me to spend my first year in Prysmian Australia doing rotations in R&D, Operations and Commercial. The next two years I will spend overseas at another Prysmian location in a role based on my skills and interests as well as the needs of the company.

My daily work is extremely varied depending on the department I am working in according to the first year rotations. In R&D I spent a couple of months working on the development of new designs or materials. In Quality Assurance a typical day would be spent ensuring the production meets International and Australian standards. Whilst in the Purchasing department for 6 weeks I analysed expenditure and areas for which costs could be reduced. Currently, I am spending a few months in operations working with Process Engineers and Factory Managers. This experience in the first year of the Graduate Program has given me an opportunity to see where my skills/interests lie and gain knowledge of the functions and procedures of the organisation as a whole.

What's your background?

I was born in Singapore and lived there until I was five years old when my family migrated to Perth. I grew up in Perth and went on to study at University where I did a double degree in Engineering/Commerce. During my time at University, I had several part-time jobs in all different industries. I also took the time to travel as much as I could. In the third year of my course, I did a summer exchange program on Sustainable Development in Madrid, Spain. This allowed me to work with and learn from students and professionals from around the world.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

YES! The Prysmian Graduate Program hires graduates from Engineering, Business and Science degrees to name a few. In my opinion you need to be an all-rounder who is versatile, curious, motivated to problem solve and enhance your leadership skills. The ability to interact and work well with different people is a vital skill in such a diverse and global company.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The Graduate Program allows you to develop your full potential and the opportunities are endless. The tasks that I undertake and the projects I have been given, have given me a real chance to challenge myself and prove my abilities. Some of these have been related to my background whilst others have been new experiences for me. Regardless of my background, I have had the chance to perform extensive tasks of each department and work with managers and professionals of every field. The opportunities associated with the Graduate Program are endless!

What are the limitations of your job?

This position is not for someone who is opposed to change and cannot be flexible. At times it can require me to step outside the box or go a bit further. I have had to challenge myself, finishing University and moving to a new city for a year before going overseas for two years may not be for everyone. In addition, the ability to mould into new roles and work in different areas requires adaptability and is not always easy.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Allow yourself to have as much diverse and challenging experiences as you can. Always try new things twice, you may be surprised by what you enjoy doing.
  • Have empathy and understanding, everyone is different and you can learn something from each person you encounter. Being humble will benefit you!
  • Have patience and see the positives in everything you experience. If you are motivated, optimistic, curious and willing to work hard you will succeed in whatever is for you!
