I usually wrap up and review the work, write down my questions or blockers, and analyse if it is time to discuss them with someone. I enjoy how the team respects my time to digest new information and try things on my own.

6.00 AM

Wake up time. Early enough to go to the gym, have a shower, breakfast, and a 20min call with my parents who live overseas.

8.45 AM

Arrive at the office and prepare a coffee before the stand-up meeting (it starts at 9 am). That’s when the trust accounting team reunites to catch up about the last day's actions and the plans for the day. After it, I have an idea of what are my responsibilities, and I had some good laughs with my team. I check the outlook agenda for the day to ensure I won't miss any meetings and jump in any left tasks that remained from the previous day.

Each day we would do something different on the radar. It can be

  • Meeting to discuss the plan and actions for the next sprint (fortnight);
  • A retrospective about how the last sprint went for us;
  • Introduction of the cards that will come on the next sprint (discuss with the team the time-estimative and difficulty of them);
  • Or a showcase where we present new features to the teams.

By this time, I have already had at least 4 cups of decaf tea.

It is almost lunchtime, but I already had too many snacks from the bar. The following picture illustrates the lovely area available to us.

Lunch

1.00 PM

I prefer to bring food from home, so the shared kitchen is very welcome. It is a great time to catch up with people from other teams on one of the couches or to go for a walk after the meal if it is a beautiful day. The views in Ahuriri are stunning!

2.00 PM

Starts by adding some songs to the office’s music queue, which is on at the office.

I might also do some peer programming time if I had any blockers or if someone on the team offers to show me a cool feature that they are building. I really enjoy it as I learn heaps about how others tackle problems and drive themselves on the application. The experience adds a lot of value to my knowledge and also to connect with the team.

3.00 PM

Teatime if I feel like I need a break. After it, there is some more time to review PRs, go through my branch’s work, check the progress of my work and organise what can be finished by 5 pm or will be on my list of next day’s tasks.

4.00 PM

Social drinks if it is Friday! Another opportunity to talk to people about their weekend plans and disconnect from the work week.

5.00 PM

That’s about time to go home. Another 30 min drive back to Havelock North, where I will go to football training, cook something delicious, spend some time with my partner, watch TV shows or work on my side projects. Depends on the day’s plan.
