The SFO has an outstanding opportunity to commence a career as an Electronic Forensic Technician. We have one full-time permanent employee status role. Employed by the SFO, you will work for a consortium of government agencies, primarily SFO and the Commerce Commission, and work from various premises in Auckland CBD and occasionally in Wellington. The consortium of government agencies investigates suspected crime that includes and goes beyond the SFO's financial crime scope.

In this role you will:

  • Contribute to investigation cases by assisting investigation teams to carry out investigative work required for the detection and apprehension of offenders through the forensic examination of electronic evidence.
  • You will identify, collect, and preserve digital evidence, and maintain.
  • Manage proper handling procedures regarding the protection, collection, and storage of physical and digital evidence.
  • You will troubleshoot, repair, assemble, and disassemble digital devices to access evidence.
  • You will perform forensic computer and digital evidence analysis and report your findings.
  • You will assist with the daily administrative tasks of the SFO's Electronic Forensic Unit.
  • You will be part of a cohesive team that sees a case from inception to closure.

To be considered for this entry-level role:

  • You will either currently hold a similar electronic forensics role, maybe with another government agency or a consultancy, or you are a recent information technology graduate who studied electronic forensics.
  • You must reference in your CV the forensics papers you have attained.
  • You have comprehensive knowledge of multiple computer systems and technology devices and the confidence to pull them apart and put them back together.
  • You have specific knowledge of hard drive discs, solid state drives, optical discs, flash memory, and mobile devices.
  • You are a self-directed learner and keep up to date with the latest technology.
  • A natural collaborator, you work effectively in a team environment.
  • You must be prepared to travel to any New Zealand location, sometimes at short notice, to assist in the execution of search warrants where you will identify and collect electronic devices.
  • It is important that you hold a driver's license, as you may be required to drive in the course of your work.

This position is within the Forensic Services career path structure. Your on-the-job training with the SFO, coupled with the knowledge and expertise you gained in your formal IT education, and your demonstrated and required levels of competency and desired behaviour, will ultimately prepare you for progression to an Electronic Forensic Investigator role.

The SFO offers the opportunity to work alongside and learn from some of the most qualified and experienced electronic forensic specialists in the country, if not the world.

We invest in your ongoing education and skills development through mentoring and by periodically offering the opportunity to attend seminars and conferences, nationally and sometimes internationally.

At the SFO, you can expect:

  • A 'growth mindset' and explore this attribute during our recruitment process and in our development discussions.
  • We believe possessing a growth mindset is a key contributor to success in the SFO environment.
  • We are a close-knit, motivated team with a strong workplace culture.
  • We recognise that diversity and inclusion are important to our work.
  • We value the unique abilities and perspectives of our employees which allows us to continue to create a supportive environment that meets the needs of our people, our business, and the communities where we work.
  • We are flexible by default organisation.

Benefits:

  • When our work allows, we have the opportunity to work remotely for a couple of days each week, and we have flexible start and finish times.
  • We offer an additional week of annual leave that covers the three usual workdays between Christmas and New Year plus two days to use at our discretion. Additionally, we receive 20 sick leave days each year, with no initial stand-down period, and we can accumulate a sick leave balance to a maximum of 260 days.
