A Day in the Life of a Data and Infrastructure Engineer

9.00 AM

I arrive at the office at 9:00 am and start by checking my emails and messages. I prioritize any urgent tasks and set my agenda for the day. Today, I have a couple of meetings and a few coding tasks lined up. After this, it is time to head to the company lunch area for coffee! It is a must to get my day started.

9.30 AM

We have a daily stand-up meeting with my full stack mentor. We discuss the progress of our current projects, any challenges we’re facing, and our plans for the day. This helps keep me on the same page and ensures smooth collaboration with the rest of the team.

10.00 AM

I spend the next few hours coding. Today, I’m working on a new feature for a client’s web application that will allow them to filter their data more efficiently. This involves writing and testing code, debugging, and ensuring the quality of the output. Occasionally, I am also using machine learning techniques to try and predict the outcomes of some data and see if this matches my expectations. If all goes well, I will embed this into the client’s web application as a further enhancement of the DMAAS (Data Management as a Service) functionality.

12.30 PM

I usually have lunch with my colleagues either in the office cafeteria or a restaurant nearby. It’s a great time to relax, chat, and get to know each other better. Sometimes, we discuss work-related topics, but often it’s just casual conversation.

1.30 PM

After lunch, I switch gears to work on some internal projects. Today, I’m developing a Power BI dashboard for the HR team to visualize our employees’ seniority in the company to make sure they receive their seniority awards on a timely base. I also spent some time on a Power Apps project that aims to calculate the business efficiencies our service can provide to our clients.

3.00 PM

I take a short coffee break in the afternoon. It’s a good opportunity to stretch my legs and catch up with co-workers.

3.30 PM

I also work on automating some manual workflows to save time and reduce potential human errors for my data team. This way we can have confidence when we present results to our clients.

5.00 PM

I spend the last part of my day wrapping up any loose ends, updating my task list, and preparing for tomorrow. I also take a few minutes to reflect on the day’s achievements and areas for improvement before I head home.

Sometimes, I am given the opportunity to represent SLB at recruiting events and connect with other engineering students. I headed down to the University of Western Australia with our recruiting team to engage with students on my career journey to date.
