What do our Graduate Civil Engineer do?
As a Graduate Civil Engineer based in Stantec’s Hastings office, you will be a vital contributor to a range of projects delivering improved outcomes for our community including essential cyclone recovery works.
Our team has a significant forward project pipeline, and we are delivering many exciting water infrastructure projects such as the recently completed ‘Waiaroha’, a water treatment plant and 10ML storage facility for the city of Hastings.
You will be responsible for:
- Evaluating data sets of information including asset inspection records and CCTV analysis and provide reports of key findings and results.
- Involvement in a range of 3 Waters projects including pipelines, treatment plants (waste & water), wastewater pump stations and potable water reservoirs.
- Stormwater flow calculations, treatment device optioneering, and design for flood affected areas.
- Contributing to the successful outcome of construction projects by assisting with contract management quality control, and site observation records together with the dedicated contract managers.
- Working with various clients to achieve their goals
What you will bring
You will be a recent graduate with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hon), ready to make a positive impact in our community! You are motivated, pragmatic, and have an appetite for learning and gaining experience across various disciplines.
You will have a strong interest in water engineering and can demonstrate personal leadership qualities and thrive in an environment in which they are challenged.
You will ideally have:
- Tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering (or soon to complete)
- Ability to learn a range of software packages such as AutoCAD 2D, Civil 3D and/or 12D to analyse and assist with design drawings
To be eligible to apply, you must:
- Be a recent graduate or due to complete your tertiary education in 2024
- Preferably hold a valid restricted or full Driving Licence
- Working Rights in New Zealand (Student Visa holder, convertible to post study open work visa, Permanent Resident OR Citizen)

I am a graduate civil engineer with one year of experience. I do a mix of technical, MSQA and design work with mentorship from more experienced members of my team. I have time for personal development and training, participating in my graduate programme and the Developing Professionals Group. Currently I spend most of my time doing MSQA for a project, which is now in the commissioning stage, where I will arrange and conduct site visits, draft Notices and Variations for my project lead to approve, and hold meetings with the client and the contractor.
So far, I have mostly worked on stormwater and wastewater where day to day involves being the doer of these projects following the task plan with support from seniors. Responsibilities with this include carrying out the tasks, checking in with the checker and seeking support when unsure. Since starting I've really enjoyed the project work and being able to come in and work on/continue something straight away. The projects have been interesting, and I feel like I get to constantly learn new processes as a grad.

The people are amazing, there is an awesome network of graduates, and all the seniors are super helpful and supportive.
There is flexibility regarding hours, and working remotely.
Being involved with a wide range of projects, based around NZ. Also having mentorship from many experienced people.

Stantec has been providing learning opportunities for graduates providing opportunities to work in the field we are interested in, with proper guidance from seniors.

Pay is alright for the size of this firm. It probably needs to be a little better hearing what my peers are making at other big companies and the mid-year salary reviews are always very minor.”
It seems really hard to get to the next career level from graduate. There is a 2-year grad program. After that, you have to do more competencies to get promoted.
The corporate-ness— it feels like it can get in the way of genuine relationships and the work itself.
Sometimes lack of support from the seniors because most of them are tied up with projects, and so busy with their work.
For me personally, due to my type of role, the availability of work. I often get quite a bit of downtime when I have nothing to work on.
