We have a fantastic opportunity for a graduate to join our team based at our Technical Services division in Auckland.
About the role
As a recent graduate, you will be involved in learning about the various parts of our Technical Services business such as hazardous, medical, and solvent & oil recovery.
In this role you will be reporting to our Regional Manager where you will have the opportunity to visit and work in our hazardous waste treatment plants in Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua, Wellington, and Christchurch. You will learn how our people, plant and processes work to deliver safe and environmentally responsible liquid and hazardous waste treatment.
The graduate position will be given many opportunities to visit other WM facilities such as landfills, transfer stations, and recycling facilities including for tyres and greenwaste composting. Internal and external training courses will be available such as spill response, fire safety, working at heights, confined space, driver licencing and endorsements.
The remainder of the graduate programme will consist of work on special projects and working with other chemists.
Our Chemists perform a crucial role in being the custodians of the chemical wastes and waste treatment processes which keep our people, customers, and the environment safe. They are responsible for providing technical and analytical advice to our Sales team and the wider operational team. On-site, they are responsible for analytical equipment calibration, troubleshooting production issues and running treatability trials to select and verify their suitability. Part of this role involves liaising with external customers on collection of hazardous substances.
About you
Our ideal person will be a recent graduate in Chemistry.
You are analytical with the ability to clearly articulate and break down complex issues to both internal and external stakeholders. You enjoy troubleshooting and aren’t afraid to roll up your sleeves and get down to the nuts and bolts. We are committed to a zero-harm culture, and you will take all practicable steps to ensure personal safety and the safety of others in the workplace.
You will be joining a dynamic and engaging team and provide personal development opportunities. If you thrive on challenge and opportunity, then this is the role for you!

As this is my first job in my career path after leaving university, I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of day-to-day responsibilities. I have been really enjoying the work and am interested in what I do, the only downside is there is quite a bit of Maths involved which is not much strong point, I am more of a Science and English person.
At the moment, I'm doing a variety of smaller things but there is no definitive responsibility that I have. I enjoy doing what I do but I do not like sitting around doing nothing, which of recently has been the case for some days.
I am quite satisfied with my work. I enjoy seeing what I have created being used and it helping and improving the way we do things.

Good people—I feel very welcomed and a part of the team.
Large business, lots to learn, variety of projects.
They allow me to move the hours I work around to fit personal commitments and issues.
WM does what it can to reduce environmental impacts from landfill gas capture to electric fleets.
There is a huge focus on each other's diversity; special days in different cultures are often celebrated.
There is quite an issue with the communication, but this is something that is being worked on.
Yet to have a big responsibility, and ambiguity in my role within the business.
Sometimes there are lulls in the work available. This does allow for creative thought, but it can feel slow.
Some of the older/smaller sites are left behind in terms of office space, location, and facilities.
The pay is as expected considering I am a graduate, but I know there is potential for an increase.
