Flexible with hours. people seem to cooperate a lot. often people do talk badly of other work areas/people in the organisation, quite openly in the office. there are opportunities to socialise outside of work. often colleagues go out for lunch together.

Good camaraderie within team, good support system and benefits, gender proportions still need work
Graduate, Sydney - 22 Apr 2021
Good workplace culture in terms of allowing healthy work life balance. expectations are realistic and not too much pressure is applied. graduate program has been good for having a cohort to socialize with. lots of green space on site to spend time in and play lunch time sports.

The other graduates i commenced with have become some of my closest friends, and many of us eat lunch together everyday. in my business area however, i experience very little sense of community or connection. this may be simply because i am very new, or it may be specific to my business area. i am unsure.

The culture of work-life balance is evident at ansto, no one is overworked (at least as far as i see it). the division between people who are in positions of authority is almost non-existent, everyone's door appears to be open to talk and assist one another. however, this isn't to say that managers aren't in control, rather there is a strong culture of respect between people.

Our team is very social and enjoys chatting about our after work hobbies and activities. we go out to lunches to celebrate birthdays and organise team lunches in the office. we use an accountability approach during office hours where we admit our mistakes and work together to move past it - personally, my favourite aspect!

Within the office, depending on the team you work in, the culture can vary greatly. there is a huge shift from our ceo and executive management to create an inclusive culture which is a step in the positive direction. there is a clear linear hierarchy across multiple levels which can be restrictive at times. after hours, there are various networking groups within our industry which provide a lot of opportunities to socialise amongst colleagues. additionally there are effective teams who meet outside of work and foster team spirit.

There is no after hours culture at my company, but the culture at work is one of working together and helping each other out. i think there are areas of the business where this might not be as apparent, but i try to interact with everyone with an open mind and friendly manner and that works 9 times out of 10.

From what i have experienced, the company's culture is one that is extremely supportive and heavily promotes the values of diversity, equity and inclusion for all. teamwork has been an integral part of the groups i have worked with and the environment at ansto is not one where you get ahead by putting others down. socialising and having a good work-life balance is also very important at ansto. the company has dozens of social clubs, social and networking events and sporting teams, including a pool, gym and soccer field all on site.

Friendly, supportive of family, diverse, cooperative.

I have many friends at work, not just in the graduate group. there is always some casual or friendly competitive sport happening at lunch. while line managers have by and large been excellent, there is a disconnect (and dissatisfaction) with higher ups.

Good work life balance

This is an area ansto is working on improving. with such a broad and diverse workforce it is a challenge. everything functions well at ansto and there is clear, organisational structure. there is also a pool, gym, great cafe and very active social club on site.
Graduate, Sydney - 03 Dec 2015
There is a great active culture within the company. individuals can be seen doing various activities throughout the lunch breaks. there are various sporting groups, i.e. running, walking, yoga, boxing etc. there are also sport competitions run over lunch time, these will generally be soccer or touch rugby. these provide a good method to bond with those in different areas and echelons of the company. the executive team also make significant effort to be accessible to everyone. the large majority are good to work with and offer a lot to work. however, some areas are under-resourced and this shows when they have multiple priorities going on. after hours is a bit different. the company has more of a family culture, meaning that most individuals will spend their after hours with families. the location of the site is also quite isolated, making it more difficult to catch up outside of work as there is a large spread of where people live.
Graduate, Lucas Heights - 02 Dec 2015
Freindly management, frequent external gatherings outside of work, great teamwork.
Graduate, Sydney - 01 Dec 2015
The graduate group are very social, it's great having a big group (14) of us. it's a big organisation so there are always new people to meet. the lunch time sport (soccer, touch, yoga, etc) is awesome. we also have a swimming pool.
Graduate, Sydney - 30 Nov 2015
Generally, the company culture is great. everyone is willing to help out and provide guidance. out of office socialising does occur in my experience, which is a laid back less formal way of getting to know your colleagues that i appreciate.
Graduate, Sydney - 30 Nov 2015
So many silos, not so useful support teams (finance/hr/training), but at a local building or team level, generally good fun. only a few young/no-family employees around, but good social outcomes when you connect with that group
Graduate, Lucas Heights, Sydney - 30 Nov 2015
The culture is generally excellent: inclusive, friendly and fun. my workplace encourages a culture of learning and challenging the status quo. however, i would love to see more initiatives to increase involvement of women throughout their careers and into senior levels.
Graduate, Sydney - 30 Nov 2015
At work everyone works together relatively well. every day for morning tea we have a chat around the coffee machine. outside of work i see less of my colleagues but there are some groups which get together for events. there is a young researchers club who regularly get together as well as a number of other groups.
