About HSE&C (Health & Safety)
The safety of our sites, the well-being of our people and our impact on the environment are absolutely fundamental to our business. Health, safety, environment and carbon (HSE and carbon) cares for and protects our people and planet from harm. HSE and carbon covers all businesses throughout bp from offshore production facilities to wind and solar farms, global networks of retail sites, and many other exciting ventures. Our ambition is to lead by example in partnering with everyone to deliver solutions that reduce risk and eliminate harm.
About the programme
The OneHSE&C program is 36-months in length and offers two 18-months rotations. The first rotation will provide a broadening opportunity to build your foundational health, safety and environmental skills, in support for one of our operational sites, projects, or businesses. All this hands-on experience will be backed up by a program of structured learning, coaching from mentors and ongoing feedback and development. The second rotation may allow you to work in one of our global teams specializing and further developing your skills in sustainability, operational or process safety, or risk.
When you first join, you may focus on:
- Working with teams to strengthen their safety culture
- Making sure risk is systematically and proactively managed by ensuring alignment and compliance with policy, standards, regulations and statutory requirements.
- Getting after our net zero, biodiversity, and sustainability aims
- Looking for continuous improvement or long-term project opportunities across risk, HSE&C systems, and learning.
What does the future hold?
As your experience and capability develops, you may lead in the HSE agenda at one of our sites or have the chance to support our businesses worldwide in measuring and managing their environmental impact.
Alternatively, you could support the deployment of technology or pursue opportunities in a technical specialism such as atmospheric emissions, marine discharges, human performance, process safety, transport safety, or remediation. You could also take a leadership career path in a local or global business.
About you - Are you ready to ignite your potential with bp?
Taking on the role of HSE&C Advisor means placing bpโs health, safety, environmental, and sustainability priorities at the center of your work. Alongside a degree in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, process safety engineering, occupational safety, sustainability management, or a related subject, you should have a passion for problem-solving, systems thinking, and a care for people and the planet.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, process safety engineering, occupational safety, sustainability management, or a related subject
- Due to the rotational nature of the program, you will need to be geographical mobile and willing to travel or relocate to our Perth office or other sites across the country.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelorโs degree from an ABET Accredited program or other program that tracks towards Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or designations.
- Past co-op or internship experience in an industrial environment

Process driven work that impacts daily operations
I have been very fortunate to work on a variety of projects throughout my time on the grad program. These projects have allowed me to develop a diverse set of skills and get a strong understanding of the bp business. I have also been given lots of opportunities to work with a range of people from different areas of the business and expand my professional networks.

I think the company has a good work-life balance, and they care about you're overall wellbeing.
Work-life balance and flexibility in the workplace I am working towards something that I believe in and doing meaningful work. Mentoring and career development opportunities are very abundant. Freedom and trust by managers and experienced no micro-management.
Inclusive atmosphere, colleagues that are willing to help and encouraged to solve problems.
Cons
Nothing really! I would say, though, that the graduate program would be good if it were three years. I am finding that a lot of the graduates below me are grasping an understanding of the business in the first year and then going into their second year and rolling off.
A little bit disjointed in the sense that there are people from all over the organization making requests from you via email. I feel that task requests should only really come from the line manager or a member of your appropriate team.
Being forced to attend the office 60/40. I enjoy working in the office but would highly prefer this to be a personal decision, not enforced from top-down. Lack of salary transparency.
Starting as a graduate, it was challenging when other team members weren't in the office to learn off due to working from home.
While it is fantastic that BP is such a large business with many opportunities for growth, that benefit also has a flip side. Working in a diverse business can make it hard to specialize or focus on areas of interest, especially in the early stages of your career. This is due to two factors: 1. People with diverse experience are highly valued, so you are often encouraged to take a generalist approach to your career. 2. It can take time for roles in your desired area to come up.
