What are your thoughts on pay and bonuses at your company?
I am aware that I am not even a qualified lawyer yet. I believe the pay fairly reflects the experience and ability that I have.
Intern, Christchurch - 28 Nov 2022
I am on a salary rate for a short term period so it is difficult to comment.
Intern, Christchurch - 28 Nov 2022
I think my pay is reasonable despite me coming back for a second summer without an increase.
Auckland - 28 Nov 2022
As summer clerks we are on living wage which is alright considering we are gaining lots of valuable experience from the firm, however I think other firms pay more.
Intern, Auckland - 28 Nov 2022
The pay is decent, qualifying for a bonus under the bonus scheme is unrealistic to achieve / difficult for juniors to have control over as it is based on billables far over and above your budget
Graduate, Auckland - 25 Nov 2022
I am very satisfied with my pay, and I appreciate that Lane Neave gave us a raise in our salaries in order to meet the costs of living standards.
Intern, Christchurch - 23 Nov 2022
The pay is not too bad. It is in line with living wage. However, this is quite standard within medium-large firms and there is more money for Summer Clerks in smaller firms. However, you have to toss up the career progression opportunities Lane Neave provides compared to that of a smaller firm.
Intern, Christchurch - 22 Nov 2022
I cannot speak about the pay at other levels, but as a Summer Clerk the pay is relatively average. It is definitely great that it is above minimum and living wage though.
Intern, Auckland - 21 Nov 2022
They incentivise hard work.
Graduate, Christchurch - 21 Nov 2022
Bonus scheme is not good, doesn't provide much incentive
Graduate, Auckland - 21 Nov 2022
Low pay, at least initially, although no worse than other law firms.
Midlevel, Christchurch - 07 Nov 2022
Where everything is so budget dependent and as a junior you have pretty much no control over workflow, what actually gets billed or discounted, and paid for the possibility of achieving a bonus seems pretty illusory. While I got one last year, I'm pretty sure this was only possible where I had a reduced PROFs budget through to August despite pulling some 7 to 7 days where I would constantly be bailing on plans after finishing Proofs' I know I'm not paid terribly but from talking to other people at the same PQE I know LN is a bit out of step. I understand it is about balancing having reasonable charge out rates and meeting other overheads, but definitely it was a bit demoralising when I started after fives years of study on about $15k less than my peers, and would take home about 10% of my charge out rate hourly after deductions. There should definitely be an accessible and implemented TOIL policy - it is not as though people can't tell when someone is working overtime.
Graduate, Wellington - 21 Oct 2022
I do not think the pay is very competitive. While there has been recent adjustments to the pay bands, I think there is still work to be don to achieve greater pay equity and reflect the income junior staff produce.
Midlevel, Wellington - 21 Oct 2022
We recently had a 7% pay increase which was obviously well received. I am very happy with my current pay for the level I am at. I believe the pay reviews are regular and decent. I don't believe the bonuses are great (but I could be wrong)
Graduate, Christchurch - 20 Oct 2022
Don't know enough about the progression of pay and bonuses yet
Graduate, Queenstown - 17 Oct 2022
Very satisfied with how they have responded to the increase in salary, have progressed very quickly on that front but would not say they are paying above and beyond.
Graduate, Wellington - 17 Oct 2022
Ideally could be higher but is not too bad and mid year salary reviews for juniors are helpful
Graduate, Christchurch - 24 Oct 2019
Very good. We get pay reviews every six months and an opportunity to pitch what we are seeking/expect.
Graduate, Auckland - 15 Oct 2019
The pay is quite low considering the level of work you do from word go, especially when you have studied for so long and are earning a lot of money for the firm. This is an across the board issue for all law firms though, from what I gauge with friends.

What are your company's best or most unusual perks? For example: free tickets, free dinners, moving expenses, taxis, pension, etc.
Best perks are the constant access to catering!
Intern, Christchurch - 28 Nov 2022
Free mornings teas catering well for dietary requirements.
Auckland - 28 Nov 2022
Lots of opportunities to upskill with great catering
Intern, Christchurch - 28 Nov 2022
Going out for meals/drinks with the team.
Intern, Auckland - 28 Nov 2022
We get the occasional tickets to events such as comedy fest, as the company is a sponsor We also get social club activities paid for from time to time After 7pm you are permitted taxis or meal expenses (but this is standard across the larger firms)
Graduate, Auckland - 25 Nov 2022
Fresh Fruit stocked twice a week in office kitchen. taxis vouchers/work uber for work events and even when I was flown up to interview. They also have a wellness sum of I think $300 a year for permanent employees to spend on wellness related things like a gym membership or naturopath etc which I think is a nice idea.
Intern, Queenstown - 25 Nov 2022
I really enjoy how Lane Neave values our wellbeing. Social wellbeing, physical and mental. What I have found have been the best unusual perks is free fruit that comes around every Monday and Wednesday.
Intern, Christchurch - 23 Nov 2022
Lane Neave provide a raft of great benefits. These include free meals and taxis if you are working late, free lockers and showers etc, free Friday night drinks and pizza, and other benefits throughout the year.
Intern, Christchurch - 22 Nov 2022
Covering tuition for profs for their graduates, morning teas on the first Friday of every month, Friday night drinks and pizza. None are super unusual but all are great.
Intern, Auckland - 21 Nov 2022
A mental health payout which can be put towards anything to better your emotional or physical health.
Graduate, Christchurch - 21 Nov 2022
Many social events, dinners, lunches, morning teas, wellness benefit, IT benefit, etc.
Midlevel, Christchurch - 07 Nov 2022
It was nice to get moving expenses, but this wasn't offered to me and I put the work in to get it over the line. I don't know if it is fair to characterise taxis from work or dinners when working later (or in a different city for work) as a perk rather than the minimum that should be done.
Graduate, Wellington - 21 Oct 2022
The best perk is the wellness bonus which is circa $500.
Midlevel, Wellington - 21 Oct 2022
We can get free legal services (up to a certain amount), we have Friday night drinks, lots of social events (which are all paid for). There are definitely lots of perks.
Graduate, Christchurch - 20 Oct 2022
Money towards well-being (gym, massage etc)
Graduate, Queenstown - 17 Oct 2022
Free CYP membership, regular free morning teas and lunches, Friday night drinks and pizza, free attendance to NZLS seminars etc.
Midlevel, Christchurch - 31 Oct 2019
Free trips to Christchurch/Queenstown, food, taxis...etc
Graduate, Auckland - 29 Oct 2019
Moving expenses and dinner and uber when working late.
Graduate, Christchurch - 24 Oct 2019
Free events - morning teas, lunches, Friday night drinks every Friday, plenty of activities and events throughout the year, annual wellness benefit.
Graduate, Christchurch - 15 Oct 2019
Free trips to Christchurch for work functions (four times a year). Flexibility to allow for family events/activities throughout the year. A great social club with all expenses paid for including a couple of family day events, comedy clubs etc.
