Te Whare o te Mātauranga represents our Kāwanatanga role in providing a National Education system that meets the needs of ākonga across Aotearoa. As lead advisers in Education, we acknowledge the educational aspirations of both Mana Whenua and The Crown. This is depicted in our Whare Mātauranga through our ‘Maihi Māori’ and ‘Maihi Karauna’. Through the names of our rōpu within Te Whare o te Mātauranga, we are reminded of the Whakapapa and commitments that must be upheld to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The Summer Internship Programme has provided 5 years of professional development opportunities for students. We offer a 12-week paid programme (between November and February) immersed in a professional environment with the guidance of our EIC team (early in career) and support groups assisting along the way. The opportunity to work within the Ministry extends across the wider organisation and the education sector agencies.

The Learning Support area of the Ministry is charged with leading the Education sector to ensure that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education.
Our Learning Support specialists work closely with families, whānau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Māori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning outcomes and promote social inclusion.
We’re the largest employer of Educational Psychologists and one of the largest employers of Speech Language Therapists (SLT) in New Zealand. An ongoing priority for the Ministry is supporting pathways into these key positions. We offer scholarships for these programmes to open the door to a diverse and rewarding career. In this profession, you will work with a rich variety of cases and interact with schools and early learning services, parents, whānau, children and young people.
