You must be enrolled in one of the four below courses to be eligible for this scholarship.

  • Bachelor of Speech and Language Pathology (Hons) offered by the University of Canterbury
  • Master of Speech and Language Pathology (MSLP) offered by the University of Canterbury
  • Bachelor of Speech Language Therapy (Hons) offered by Massey University (Albany campus or Distance programme)
  • Master of Speech-Language Therapy Practice offered by The University of Auckland (Grafton campus)

What the scholarship provides

This scholarship will:

  • pay you $5,000 per year of study upon successful completion of the academic year
  • enable you to spend time each year job shadowing a Ministry SLT so you have opportunities to see how SLTs work with children, whanau and teachers
  • offer you one guaranteed placement at a Ministry office during the practicum block course with additional $1,500 payment paid before the placement starts
  • offer strengthened support for Māori scholarship recipients by connecting you with a network of Ministry Māori SLTs and allowing greater flexibility in your placement experience
  • guarantee you an interview in the Ministry’s annual SLT graduate recruitment round in your final year.

Who is eligible for this scholarship

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  1. be accepted onto one of the courses of study.
  2. be studying full time.
  3. be interested in working in the education sector as a Speech Language Therapist
  4. be a New Zealand citizen or have New Zealand permanent residency.
  5. not be repeating a failed course.

We will give priority to applicants who (in descending order of priority):

  • can demonstrate proficiency in te reo Māori or te reo Rangatira (NCEA level 2 equivalent or a higher qualification or equivalent)
  • can demonstrate proficiency in a Pasifika language (NCEA level 2 equivalent or a higher qualification or equivalent) 
  • are of Māori or Pasifika descent 
  • can demonstrate proficiency in a spoken language in addition to English that is widely used by children attending early childhood centres and schools in New Zealand (NCEA level 2 equivalent or higher qualification or equivalent).

    2. Your strengths and experience, personal and professional, that will help you to become an effective Speech Language Therapist.

  • any special circumstances you would like the selection panel to consider.

If you are applying for priority selection:

  • submit evidence in the form of formal qualifications or written references from a tertiary institution, a kaumatua or a community leader of your language proficiency.
