Job Description

New Zealand Steel, a wholly-owned subsidiary of BlueScope, manufactures and markets a range of flat-rolled steel products for the building, construction, manufacturing and agricultural sectors.  You may know us for our flagship COLORSTEEL® brand.

What you will be doing

We are looking for Process, Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical and Automation Engineers who are after the practical hands-on experience, not just an office-based role. We also have the advantage of being the biggest single-site employer in New Zealand; therefore, can offer a range of engineering opportunities across varied industrial processes.

From day one you will have a role with real career prospects, real responsibilities, and real opportunities to apply for your degree.  There will be the opportunity to be involved with a variety of improvement projects that will enable ‘technical on-the-job’ training to ensure you have the skills you need to realise your full potential. New Zealand Steel provides its graduates with a wide variety of challenging activities; we believe in giving you the broadest experience so you can gain a working knowledge in several areas.

Our three-year graduate programme consists of:

  • Unique 9-month placements across our varied operational manufacturing plants over three years. You will receive a comprehensive overview of engineering across diverse processes and be introduced to different people, challenges and successes.
  • You could be rotated through our Steel Mill in Glenbrook, Waikato North Head Mine Site or Pacific Steel.
  • Each rotation is catered specifically to your development needs and is a great opportunity to discover what pathway you would like to pursue.

Benefits

  • A competitive development salary
  • Learning and development opportunities to build your career, supported by a team and managers who want to help you succeed.
  • Challenging and interesting work projects
  • Study assistance
  • PPE workwear provided
  • Social Club
  • Onsite medical centre, cafeteria and Credit Union Bank
  • A working environment located away from the Auckland rat race

What we can offer

Being part of the BlueScope brand makes us a strong and successful global company offering connections throughout the world and providing access to resources and tools from the wider business. We believe our people are our strength and embrace diversity and inclusion as we aim to have the right people in the right roles to move us into the future.

We have opportunities for learning and development, a unique work location, an onsite medical centre, free parking, an excellent remuneration package and a supportive team environment.

I currently work in the iron plant maintenance team. I generally work on small projects and maintenance jobs. The projects involve research and design, and the smaller maintenance jobs are generally required to be finished ASAP so involve small amounts of design and planning.

Pros and cons of working at New Zealand Steel

Pros

  • Options. The number of opportunities that are available combined with the support for development and growth is paramount.

  • There is a great balance of computer to fieldwork.

  • Learning from experienced engineers.

  • The team I am working with my manager and my colleague, they are very supportive and helpful.

  • Gaining real industry experiences.

Cons

    • Depending on where you grew up and whether you decided to live locally, the location of the Glenbrook site can be a downside. This is especially true if you are used to city life, but it can also be a major upside if you are looking to move away from the traffic and lifestyle of urban areas.

    • I would like to have some experience with the operational side of heavy vehicles to further my understanding of what I ask for/expect as a Production Engineer/Shift supervisor.

    • Sometimes would be stressful directly dealing with customer requirements.
