Nous is a great place to work…

Nous is recognised as Australia’s top workplace, ranking first in the 2021 Best Places to Work Awards (Australia), and a Great Place to Work in 2019, 2017, 2015 and 2013 – we only enter every second year! We’ve been previously named Best Management Consulting Firm by the Australian Financial Review. Nous has also been acknowledged as one of the Top 100 Graduate Employers, ranking 4 in the Management Consulting industry, and placing overall 38 on the 2022 list, which uses popularity and quality to assess graduate employers in Australia, and look forward to extending our influence globally.

What we do...

We offer a broad consulting capability across business strategy, public policy, organisational capability, executive talent and development, transformational change and digital strategy and capability.

You will play a key role in various multidisciplinary teams and get the opportunity to be involved in projects across many different sectors, financial services, education, human services and health for example. This also includes, but is not limited to, projects where we work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations.

These are just some examples of the types of projects we have recently completed:

  • Engaged with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) to develop their strategy, operational model and assist with service design
  • Provided strategic advice to help universities thrive in turbulent environments, for example by redesigning operating models to be more responsive to unexpected events such as COVID-19
  • Developed quality standards frameworks for the education sector to improve outcomes for children and young people
  • Developed data strategies to ensure that not-for-profits are equipped to deliver impact at scale
  • Reviewed care coordination for Indigenous Australians with chronic disease, drawing on consultations with service providers and Indigenous clients
  • Redesigned digital architecture to provide better online service experiences for people experiencing hardship as a result of bushfires and other natural disasters
  • Designed and conducted evaluations of organisational improvement programs for private sector companies, for example leadership development and customer-centred culture programs

You will contribute to positive outcomes for a range of communities and stakeholders, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Nous Group recognises and acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s continued connection to land and sea as the First Peoples of Australia. Nous Group is committed to working with and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities to support them to achieve their goals.

We use our wide range of expertise and best endeavours to advance the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through our work internally and with clients.  We do this by:

  • Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and companies
  • Acknowledging and respecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s lived experience and expertise to inform all our project work
  • Actively seeking to attract, recruit and employ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across all roles
  • Building our competence so we can achieve better outcomes with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

Nous strives to create and sustain a work environment in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff feel empowered to be their best selves and add unique value through their individual capabilities and lived experiences. You will have the opportunity to contribute to projects that empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities to achieve their goals, as well as a broader range projects that achieve positive impact for other stakeholders and communities.

You will also have the opportunity to contribute to our internal initiatives through involvement in implementing our Reconciliation Action Plan and capability development frameworks – such as our Cultural Competency Framework and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Procurement Strategy.

They can be quite varied. I have done a lot of data analytics work at Nous, so my day could easily include modelling in R. A lot of other tasks that Nousers typically do is desktop research, where you will research a topic and collate the information into a coherent narrative.

Pros and cons of working at Nous Group

Pros

  • The workplace culture is warm and welcoming. They cultivate an environment that encourages knowledge sharing and high (but supported) performance.

  • The work we get to do is intellectually stimulating, meaningful, and impactful.

  • There is a (fairly) flat organisational structure, and you have a lot of opportunities to interact with principals - within projects, the team structure is well-balanced with senior and junior consultants and project directors are very hands-on.

  • They are invested in my personal development as a consultant and regularly provide feedback (positive and constructive) to help me grow.

  • Nous Group has delivered over $7 million in subsidised consulting through our Community Partnerships Scheme; our Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan directs our collective efforts towards enhancing the self-determination and future of First Nations Australians; Operationally, they uphold sustainability through eco-conscious travel and procurement practices, waste reduction, emissions targets, and compensating for residual emissions.

Cons

    • The workload changes: sometimes it's really busy, and sometimes very quiet, but that's part of the job!

    • My company is flexible. Sometimes there are longer days (until 7 pm for example) but the self-managed approach means it's up to each employee how they use their work hours (within reason of course).

    • The starting salary and super for a graduate is about standard compared to other companies. Depending on company performance and the specific contract you signed, you can receive a bonus at the end of the financial year.

    • The training was good but was predominantly online and I think would have benefitted greatly from being in person. In terms of on-the-job training, it's fantastic. Our intranet and IP are great and there is so much to learn.

    • The hardest part of working at Nous is the hours - they aren't too bad, but sometimes you will have to flex up on some nights to complete a deadline.
