In my current rotation, I’m working on a project to reduce container detention costs. Steamship lines and airlines charge detention fees to compensate for the use of their shipping containers, after a certain amount of time. These charges tend to increase per day after exceeding a certain number of days. We are looking at root causes so we can minimize these costs. This is my final rotation and I’ve really enjoyed the exposure to different business units and the opportunity to gain a holistic understanding of the whole of Visy. This has provided me with an insight into the day-to-day obstacles of each department and the probable optimization opportunities in each division. The best advice I’ve been given so far is not to avoid having hard conversations.
