Job Satisfaction at NZ Transport Agency - Waka Kotahi

Flexible working environment, I provide advice relating to conflicts of interest and assist in integrity investigations. However I do not undertake strictly legal work which I would like some experience in as a legal graduate. Work across the risk and assurance team to assist where necessary, a lot of the work can be ad hoc and responsive.

My day to day responsibilities include tracking budget and budget reporting, reporting on people survey results and interacting with different stakeholders. There are some usual tasks but I'm given opportunities to develop and learn whenever my team can.

Data extraction and compilation

I'm involved in meaningful work that I want to be involved in. My role involves supporting my team members in work and leading another piece of work. My workload ranges everyday because of that.

My day to day work has been very satisfying. Although my team deals with some quite high-stakes things, I didn't feel like I was thrown in the deep end when I started. My tasks feel meaningful, and I have been given the chance to work on and contribute to organizationally important activities; I have not been lumped with the menial tasks no one else wants.

Reviewing designs for different projects within the stormwater technical discipline, reading emails and ensuring that I am kept up to date with what is going on in different projects I am apart of, attending numerous meetings for projects when required, working on individual projects during off-meeting hours and when free from capital project work, assisting in completing work given to me by my team members, occasional site visits to reinforce my understanding within the engineering field, and attending graduate programme meetings to stay in contact with my network of graduates (Setup by the graduate progamme).

Creation of marketing collateral. Communications support - engaging with the community on our major public transport project.

Review project environmental and ecological plans, analyse culvert information for fish passage, updating GIS systems and research environmental information for projects.

I work as a Project Coordinator, working towards becoming a project manager. My duties and responsibilities revolve around coordinating various aspects of the projects I am involved in on a daily basis, to ensure smooth functioning of the project, such as financials, meetings, contracts, and so on.

I am happy with the work I did with my first team and my managers were keen on immersing me in different parts of the wider team so I experienced a lot more than what I anticipated. I have just finished my first rotation in the Emerging Professionals programme so I am starting to understand what my new team does and how it connects with the rest of the organisation.

Given responsibility to work on important projects that have impacts.

I have just started in a new team, but I am trying out a strategic policy role for the first time. I complete tasks with a degree of autonomy but also with the safety of knowing someone else will check my work before it goes anywhere. I have been preparing a response for a select committee review

Every day is truly different, some days I am writing up a PowerPoint, others I'm in meetings all days. Some times I am even just sitting and reading up everything that I need to learn. I keep a goals and work plan close by so that I can just track my progress so I try every week to update that too.

I enjoy some of what I do but as a new recruit with a masters degree I want to continue progressing and learning new transferable skills and competencies to continue to accelerate myself and career trajectory.

The work is fulfilling as I understand the work I do will help others do their work better. Processes and systems are scrutinised to ensure they have good controls in place and they make it easier for users of these systems to use.

I am still early on in my time at Waka Kotahi, so I do not have heaps of responsibilities yet. However, I'm being given heaps of opportunities to develop my skills, like making communications content and developing a comms plan. I've also been helping with editing presentations and documents.

I am an emerging professional in the urban mobility team. I work across many different projects relating to moving around cities.

Technical work in each rotation is interesting and can challenge myself everyday.
