Graduate Engineer Transport at WSP New Zealand
Bachelor of Engineering Honours at University of Auckland
7.45 AM
My journey into work often takes the better part of 30 minutes. Despite WSP’s hybrid work structure, I really enjoy being in the office alongside my team.
8.15 AM
After making it to my desk, I will begin my day by checking my emails as well as my Microsoft Teams messages. I am then able to plan my day effectively, often using my notebook for necessary tasks I wish to complete.
8.30 AM
Task 1 of the day involves resolving comments for an intersection upgrade in New Plymouth. This particular project is in the 90% concept design phase, so attention to detail is key! We are using Civil 3D and AutoCAD software to complete the design.
10.00 AM
Today we have our fortnightly team meeting. This meeting is always conducted in person as we prioritise face-to-face interaction. Primary focuses within the meeting include individual workload, upcoming jobs, as well as team utilisation.
11.00 AM
Time for a coffee! Definitely lacking a bit of energy at this point in the day, so pretty likely for me to head to the kitchen and grab a drink.
11.15 AM
As I have a Safety in Design Meeting tomorrow, I am responsible for populating a spreadsheet of risks before the meeting. The purpose is to highlight potential risks that may arise on site to mitigate them as early as possible.
12.30 PM
Midday means lunchtime! Usually, I bring something from home, but today we are lucky enough to have a company provided shared lunch.
1.00 PM
I have a site visit this afternoon out in Kumeu. The project involves designing a road safety barrier for one of the Transport sector’s major alliances. I am visiting the site prior to design to take measurements and look out for obstacles that may hinder the design process.
5.00 PM
Done for the day! I’m greeted to great weather as part of my journey home. One of the perks of the Westhaven Office is the amazing views in summer.
7.00 PM
I try my best to keep active in my free time after work. Tonight, I have football out at Western Springs – a great way to end the day.
