I think as a grad and an engineer in general the best you can do is try to be always open to learn and try your best at everything that you do. And the promotions will follow automatically.

The company has a lot of great initiatives in helping communities with infrastructure work in both Australia and overseas in countries such as PNG.

Our teams work collaboratively within themselves and with other teams, we often have projects with other disciplines. Managers treat younger and less experienced employees with respect paving the way for them to develop and build the knowledge and confidence to take over projects

I can't really say much, but I think Cardno is very committed to diversity in all senses, whether that be in employment opportunities or awareness-raising. Recently we have had a few female engineers taken on board, and I know that we have a few people who are a part of the LGBT community. There is a wide range of ethnicity in the office too. Child care and maternity/paternity leave are definitely promoted and encouraged, as one of the recently appointed Business Unit Managers took 4 months of paternity leave off.

I move between a Coastal Engineering and Contaminated Sites role. On any day I could be out in the field collecting data, which can be out on the water or in a terrestrial environment. Alternatively, I'll be in the office analysing the data and writing reports for clients. It's a well rounded role where I am able to work on projects from start to finish.

My Business Unit Manager is my direct report and he is fantastic and very supportive. I have multiple technical leads through the Sydney W&E team that are great for different reasons. It has been beneficial having diversity in my mentorship.

I have been to the Brisbane, Gold coast and Melbourne offices and they're all state of the art, brand new spaces. Lots of lush plants, great views and communal areas. some have free gym access and all have great coffee machines.

My interview was carried out with my now direct supervisor and Business Unit Manager, so questions and communication about the role were honest.

I have participated in the grad program, Cardno university modules, multiple webinars, and sponsored training events. Management has been very supportive of training and I have improved my GIS capabilities, my report writing and my management abilities.

Pre-covid I would be in the office from roughly 8:45am to 5:15pm - which usually included anywhere between a 30-60 minute lunch break. Cardno are definitely more focused on output than the specificity of how many hours you work. Compared to other companies, Cardno are really progressive with work flexibility. It is company policy to allocate 40 hours of the working week to billable project/admin codes, however this can be made flexible.
