Pros & Cons
Work life balance and sense of purpose.
The diverse range of work within the agency allows me to explore different concepts, challenge myself, strengthen key skills and build knowledge.
An amazing and unique part of the graduate program at NIAA is the opportunity to work in one of our many regional offices for a period.
I have been really well supported in my development and been given opportunities to do work that is meaningful to me.
Within a single agency, there is a broad away of work and subject areas that you can be exposed to a and move between. Agency also accommodates flexible working arrangements, has offices in a range of locations, and teams are adept at working across these locations.
Feels like government processes has many levels of decision making that limits our ability to make fast progress and deliver good outcomes.
Many levels of decision making, work is slow moving, feel like a cog in the system.
Not all program areas have interesting/challenging work all the time for their graduates.
Bureaucratic challenges
I have found that lack of resourcing and time can impact your ability to make meaningful contributions to the team and wider agency.

Once you're in the Australian Public Service, career options abound. Within the Agency, there is a lot of movement and fluidity, and leadership even encourage us to experience different program areas to get some fresh perspective on our work.
The agency really does work on diversity and has networks to push that work. They have around 25% of mob who work for them so are very aware of Indigenous issues and needs of Indigenous employees.
My direct supervisor and my director are both readily accessible, and they actively care about my wellbeing and support me in my professional development.
The process is long! To enter the grad program, I submitted an application with a CV and pitch, then completed a written assessment, group interview/activity, individual interview.
The L&D offerings include short courses run by internal and external facilitators, online learning modules, longer term development programs, coaching services, just-in-time learning options, studies assistance, and Masters and PhD scholarships.
