Jamuna Sharma Dhakal

Graduate Engineer at Powerco

Master of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) at Auckland University of Technology

I grabbed my PPE gear and met the Project Manager at the car park. We are going to the Livingstone Substation in Patea where new assets (switchgear, control system, protective devices) have been recently installed.

6.00 AM

As an early riser, I like to start my day as soon as the sun comes up. Living close to the coast, my morning usually starts with a half-hour jog. The waves, sand, and ocean view are all picture-perfect to start my day. I have a quick shower and head to work.

7.30 AM

I left home early today as I have a site visit planned with one of the Project Managers. I arrive at the office, put my lunch in the fridge, make a cup of Earl Grey, and grab some fruits from the kitchen (free fruit - another perk of working at Powerco). Once I get to my desk, I have a quick catch-up with my colleagues, and chat about their weekend activities. I drink my tea along with a nut bar. I go through my emails and calendar and then plan out my work for the day.

8.00 AM

I’ve been working in the Asset Fleet team which is divided into Overhead and Power Assets. For the site visit, I grabbed my PPE gear and meet the Project Manager at the car park. Laurren, the Project Manager Support joined us. We are going to the Livingstone Substation in Patea where new assets (switchgear, control system, protective devices) have been recently installed. Along with the Asset Photo Update, I got a chance to catch up on past failures in this substation. On our way back, we discussed on Transformers, Overhead Lines, Hydrogen fuel technology, etc.

We reach the office by noon. I returned to my desk and updated the Asset Engineer about the progress of the data compiled for the Cable Failure Investigation project. I’ve been working on finding common failure modes and type issues using historical cable fault data. Lately, I’ve been navigating between SAP, Tableau reports, and OMS job details a lot.

Office

1.00 PM

Lunchtime. I like to chat over lunch with some other colleagues (and graduates). We share lunch and discuss recipes and current affairs of course. This is a great time to discuss work ideas and find out what is going on in their rotation as well.

Back to my work- I got an email from the Network Performance Improvement lead, asking for the list of identified feeder sections (which may have insulator issues) for an acoustic inspection. This is a part of the Fault Analytics Project of the Overhead Fleet team, which I am also involved. I consulted with the Overhead Fleet Manager and started working on it.

Meeting

2.30 PM

I briefly break and grab another cup of tea and do a stuff quiz: Afternoon trivia challenge. I don’t get a good score but progressing every day.

I make a list of updates/queries to discuss in our weekly Team meeting. Since the Asset Fleet team is dispersed all over different offices, we have regular online catch ups. After an hour-long meeting, I continue working on feeder lists, making sure we get maximum benefits from acoustic inspection.

4.30 PM

That’s a wrap. Before I shut down my laptop, I take time to review the tasks I’ve completed today. I also like to keep track of any progress made so far. I make a note of any unfinished tasks

6.00 PM

My husband and I are fond of gardening, we grow seasonal flowers and veggies in our backyard. We spend this time of day, mostly in the garden watering the plants, pulling off the weeds, and sowing the seed…. This is also a good time to catch up on our days.

7.00 PM

Since it’s a special day (Manghe Sankranti) in Nepal, I’m cooking an authentic Nepalese meal for dinner today. My husband and I make a group call to our families back home while enjoying dinner.

9.30 PM

We watch some Netflix before going to bed.
