Assistant Project Manager (Intern) at RCP
Bachelor of Commerce at University of Auckland
6.00 AM
Up early this morning to celebrate the last day of the week and nearing the end of my internship! Got dressed and jumped in the car to drive over to the beach. Normally, I wake up at around 7.00 AM so would still be well asleep!
7.00 AM
Arrived at my favourite carpark and met my friend, Olive, there. We enjoyed a stroll around the Mount and then went for a quick dip at the beach! We have had fab weather for the last few days, so the water was almost 22 degrees!
7.15 AM
Drove back home, got dressed, quick shower, two pieces of toast, a banana and then off to work!
8.10 AM
I am running a little late today, so I catch a ride with mum down to the office.
8.20 AM
Once I arrive, I head over to put my stuff down at my desk and then have a quick chat to my colleagues, Georgia and Nathan, about the action plan for the day (as well as Nathan’s wedding catering). I’ve been trying to start liking coffee lately, so I make myself an EXTREMELY weak latte with cinnamon on top (sometimes I have strawberry Nesquik to the horror of everyone else in the office). Then I set myself up at my desk, sort through my emails, and make a quick to-do list.
One of the first things I do is update the RFI (Request for Information) and RFA (Request for Approval) Trackers for the projects I am currently working on. This is super helpful to stay on top of as it is a register of all of the key items in the project that require clarification/change. After this, I draft up some CIs (Contract Instructions) for those that require one to save Georgia and Steyn (the real pros) some time.
10.00 AM
We have a site visit today for a seasonal worker’s accommodation in Paengaroa (about a 30-minute drive from Tauranga). So, we chuck on our protective equipment (PPE) and head out to site. As we walk around site, they inform us about how they are tracking against the programme, works that are soon to be completed, and notify us of any queries they might have. In addition, we go through a quick check of the health and safety on the site! This visit gives us an opportunity to assess the current stage of construction as well as any potential risks/issues that could arise.
12.00 PM
Normally, if it’s sunny, I have my lunch down on the waterfront steps with Georgia and enjoy a quick wander through the city. However, today was our quarterly social event, so the team enjoyed a nice lunch out in the sunshine!
1.00 PM
Back to work! We had our PCG (Project Control Group) meeting today for a hospital extension. Before this, a PCG report needs to be drafted up, which summarises the previous month’s activities, identifies risks, gives an update on any external factors, and details upcoming activities. These meetings help us, and the client stay connected and informed throughout the project lifespan.
2.30 PM
One of my favourite things about RCP is the dogs! Today, we were lucky enough to have three extra colleagues in: Taco, Maggie, and Archie!
3.00 PM
After the quick dog break, it is time to sort out the meeting minutes for the PCG. These minutes must be redistributed to PCG members within two working days. Today’s meeting was cruisy, so this doesn’t take too long! Afterwards, Georgia, Steyn, and I action the points that have been raised in the meeting and follow up with some consultants that need a bit of friendly encouragement…
4.30 PM
Time to wrap up for the day! Nathan has sent me some Variation Orders to have a look through, update on the tracker, and ensure we have not been double charged by the contractor to the client. I also have a look at this project to confirm what the architect requested in the IFC drawings (Issued for Construction) to compare to what the same architect had raised as incorrect on a previous site visit.
5.00 PM
I pop my AirPods in and walk home through Memorial Park. I am super lucky that when I am back in Tauranga over uni breaks that I live just a 30-minute walk from the RCP Tauranga Office.
5.30 PM
I get dressed and take Winston out for a walk on the boardwalk—got to get my steps in!
7.00 PM
I am lucky to be the 2025 president for Auckland University Property Students Society (AUPSS). This means there is lots of prep to do before uni starts again. I whip up a quick agenda before my 7.15 PM meeting with the executive team. In this meeting, we run through what still needs to be done for the upcoming events for the first half of the year. This includes venue and bus bookings, ensuring consistent communication with our industry contacts, engaging first-year students, our social sports team, and more!
8.15 PM
Done for the day! Keen to watch The Rookie and have a cup of tea!
