Manufacturing and Processing Traineeship Operations at Sims Limited

Being a part of the shed crew, we don’t have designated break times, as we deal with customers, unloading trucks and members of the public.

6.00 AM

I arrive to work and get ready for the day. This involves getting my PPE and clothes out of my locker and getting changed into them.  I also make sure I have my helmet, gloves and radio on.

6.30 AM

I attend pre-start with the non-ferrous team. They advise us of our schedules for the day and go over any EHS requirements. They also advise if any of our machines are offline for the day. In this meeting I am advised that I will be driving the forklift to load and unload trucks, scrap metal bins, pods and move scrap metal – which varies from copper, brass, aluminum, domestic.

6.50 AM

I head over to the workshop and get in my assigned forklift for the day and drive over to the non-ferrous site. I then start loading and unloading for the day.

9.30AM

Being a part of the shed crew, we don’t have designated break times, as we deal with customers, unloading trucks and members of the public. I check in with my team leader and ask if it is okay to go for break now, as we don’t have any trucks waiting. I head over to the ATB (staffroom and training room), sit out the front of it at the table and have a chat with some colleagues who are also on break.

9.50 AM

During this time, I unload a few more trucks and assist public customers who wish to sell their non- ferrous scrap metal to us. My responsibility is to ensure that they have their 100 points of ID, as per legislation. I enter their details onto SAI (which is our weighbridge system), I then weigh their product on the scales in the shed, record this on the ticket and then verify the type of product it is. E.g. Copper or brass.

During this I instruct the customer to wait in the designated waiting area. Once I have verified all the information, I advise them to go to the weighbridge, where the cashier will pay them out.  As it is also end of month, we have to undertake a stock take (a count of) all our inventory (product we have on site).

My job is to assist with weighing up the product, I grab a bin with my forklift, drive it over to the scales in the shed and weigh it on there. I then record the gross tare and net tare and write this down on a tag and place it on the bin. Another team member will then come and record all this information onto our spreadsheet on our tablet.

1.00 PM

I head over to the ATB and have my lunch and play on my phone.

1.30 PM

I unload trucks for the rest of the afternoon then I am finished for the day.
