Take your place at the heart of New Zealand's power system. Kick start your professional career with Aotearoa's Transmission Grid Owner and Operator

Transpower owns and operates New Zealand's National Grid - the unique high voltage transmission network crossing mountain passes, forests, farmland, and open sea, bringing electricity from where it is generated to where it is needed most.

With a whole-of-industry view of the electricity sector, we're at the forefront of the electrification and expansion of infrastructure New Zealand needs for a zero-carbon future.

Summer Interns are key to ensuring we have a pipeline of collaborative potential graduates with the work experience, skills, and behaviours needed to succeed in graduate roles throughout the business, post successful study completion.

About the Opportunity

Our Summer Intern Programme runs from November to mid-February each year. From day one you will be provided with real work and support from a collaborative professional and knowledgeable team to gain an introductory level understanding of Transpower's role right now, as well as in to the future.

Support, coaching, and mentoring will be provided by our super approachable Early Careers Programme Lead, second year Summer Interns, and a buddy from our Young Professionals community. Together they will enable you to quickly feel comfortable and proactively build relationships beyond your placement.

Our paid Summer Internship programme gives you a fantastic opportunity to experience Transpower and some of the required hours needed to graduate.

While our programme is primarily based in Wellington, we have limited places available in Christchurch. If you are from other locations, our previous interns have worked together to find accommodation as a group, or stayed at the Victoria University halls in Wellington which offer short term accommodation and are a short walk from our office.

Ultimately, building positive relationships coupled with on the job learning and delivery of great work will give you a real advantage if you wish to apply for the Transpower Graduate Programme in your final year https://www.transpower.co.nz/about-us/careers-transpower/graduate-programme-and-internships/day-life-videos-transpower-graduates

To be considered, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate that you:

  • are working towards a Bachelor of Engineering in a relevant discipline (Electrical, Electronic, Mechatronics, Civil, Engineering Science) with a minimum grade point average (GPA) above 5
  • have well-developed written and verbal communication skills
  • have a genuine interest in the Electricity Sector and enabling the energy future
  • are studying at a New Zealand university and are a citizen, resident, or hold full eligibility to work in New Zealand

At a conversational interview we'll be looking for critical thinking, curiosity, and the ability to work well with others - along with a keen interest in where our exciting sector is going!

Engineering support for various projects. As a grad, you get great exposure to the variety of work that Transpower undertakes, and you get to add value by being part of different projects and tasks. I'm using a lot of PLS-CADD to ensure that our assets are complying with the safety standards. Also working on several investigation projects to minimise safety risks. Also, working on concept assessments which require collaboration and high level design work.

Pros and cons of working at Transpower

Pros

  • The people are really supportive and are always willing to help you out.

  • Graduates can be given numerous opportunities to see the many different assets that Transpower owns and operates.

  • Transpower has 7 am-7 pm office hours and is very flexible as long as you communicate and get your work done.

  • There is a strong community of young professionals and plenty of opportunities to socialise with colleagues after work.

  • There is a whole sustainability group, with projects like recycling glass insulators and volunteer days to plant trees.

Cons

    • The workload can fluctuate based on the placement team.

    • Has the ability to work from home but that's a discussion to have with the manager, highly recommended coming into the office for better engagement and development.

    • In the graduate programme, graduates are given a taste of doing design work, but this is only offered through a brief 2-month placement at an external engineering consultancy.

    • Ambiguity of my role within the business.

    • The graduate programme was a bit disorganised this year as placements were only finalised 3 months after we started.
