As New Zealand's only transmission company, Transpower's role as a State-Owned Enterprise is to build, operate, and maintain the National Grid. At the heart of the electricity sector, we have a unique and critical role helping to enable and accelerate a net carbon zero future.
Transpower calculates annual transmission charges each year in accordance with the Transmission Pricing Methodology (TPM), which is a schedule of the Electricity Industry Participation Code and is governed by the Electricity Authority. Because we are a natural monopoly, our investments in grid assets and allowable revenue are regulated by the Commerce Commission.
As the demand for electricity continues to grow to meet climate change and sustainability goals, so too does the demand for the critical infrastructure and Transmission services to enable this change.
The Pricing team is a small, supportive group who operate and administer the grid pricing function that calculates how Transpower's costs as owner and operator of the Grid are recovered from our direct customers (~$1B pa).
The team must equally consider the interests of all our customers. This places a heavy reliance on consistency and precedent (as opposed to unregulated pricing that is much more flexible). The team is an internal gatekeeper for ensuring Transpower is kept whole (as a cost recovery business), and pricing outcomes are consistent with regulation.
The team ultimately supports Transpower to be a successful and commercially orientated business that works for the long-term interests of New Zealand.
Based in our Waikoukou Head Office, you'll learn to use the pricing models that determine how revenue is recovered from customers who connect to the National Grid. Over time, you'll help customers understand the pricing implications of new connections to the grid.
You'll have great on the job training and support to be able to provide evidence-based recommendations to the Pricing Manager and:
Perhaps you are already in an analyst role looking to grow within a sector that's fast paced, or you are interested in moving to the centre of the industry and joining a team that's enabling the energy future for New Zealand.
Enthusiasm, curiosity, and good people skills. You'll have a minimum of two years' work experience and be known for your organisational skills, passion for numbers, and attention to detail, coupled with the ability to learn quickly! Collaborative, you enjoy working in a team, and are a calm, positive problem solver who is willing to ask questions and seek to understand.
An equal opportunity employer, we value the diversity of thought and knowledge sharing that comes from our people from over 28 nationalities. In addition to working as part of a small but mighty pricing team, there are always opportunities to learn at Transpower, and we support your health and wellness with a range of employee benefits including insurances and professional development, project and secondment opportunities over time.
If an opportunity to understand the regulatory environment we operate within, and how our revenue is allocated among customers while working across projects that always throw out a few curve balls appeals to you, please review the position description available below and apply without delay.
While reasonable accommodation is available to suit your personal circumstances, candidates must have existing eligibility to work.
Engineering support for various projects. As a grad, you get great exposure to the variety of work that Transpower undertakes, and you get to add value by being part of different projects and tasks. I'm using a lot of PLS-CADD to ensure that our assets are complying with the safety standards. Also working on several investigation projects to minimise safety risks. Also, working on concept assessments which require collaboration and high level design work.
With the Graduate programme, I am doing a lot of training and learning which I am enjoying. I am able to take my time with my learning which is good for me
Interesting tasks. The work feels relevant and meaningful.

In the graduate programme, graduates are given a taste of doing design work, but this is only offered through a brief 2-month placement at an external engineering consultancy.
Ambiguity of my role within the business.
The graduate programme was a bit disorganised this year as placements were only finalised 3 months after we started.
