The Property team covers a wide area of novel issues involving material damage and the work varies a lot. I find it to be a great team to develop my legal thinking.

5.00 AM

I normally wake up between 5.00 am and 5.30 am. I enjoy getting in some exercise in the morning before I head to the office. I reserve my mornings for either a swim or run, and my afternoons for additional gym sessions.

I pack my bag for the day, normally this will consist of gym clothes, lunch, gym equipment and work clothes depending on what I have scheduled. Once I am packed, I walk to the pool.

6.10 AM

I arrive at the pool; I get changed and dive in the water before 6.30 am. In the mornings I tend to swim for about an hour or until I reach a distance I am happy with.

7.45 AM

After a quick spa, I get changed and start walking to the office, which is right around the corner from where I swim.

8.00 AM

I arrive at the office, and I put my bags down at my desk and walk straight to the coffee machine. Coffee is a necessity for me. I will make some breakfast, we are lucky enough to have a small breakfast bar at work, so I typically will have a banana and muesli and eat at my desk. I normally begin work by checking my inbox for any overnight emails and my calendar for any meetings during the day.

9.00 AM

Everyone has arrived at the office, and I have a quick chat with my partners as they sit down. After, looking at my to do list, I continue to work on a coverage report that will ultimately be given to an insurer. Typically, in the Property team, my work will consist of research, writing reports on issues of insurance coverage and issue of recovery. The Property team covers a wide area of novel issues involving material damage and the work varies a lot. I find it to be a great team to develop my legal thinking.

11.00 AM

After I spend few hours on the report, I will look to my to do list and attack any further tasks for the day. I decided to finish writing a brief of evidence for a factual witness regarding a big litigation that I am involved in. Writing documents such as a brief of evidence is a great learning experience, it helps me be familiar with the language and formatting required by the Court and other lawyers.

12.00 PM

I take my lunch earlier in the day, I will either snack on whatever I have prepared the night before or walk down the road to the Woolworths. I use this time to chat to the other grads catching up on what they are working on.

12.30 PM

I am back at my desk; I try to have a short lunch to ensure I can complete my tasks for the day. Frequently, as I work, I will have questions about the file I am working on. I am lucking enough to have two partners that sit adjacent to me, and we have conversations about anything I am confused about or do not understand. I find this accessible approach to learning helpful.

3.00 PM

The Property team will gather and attempt to complete both the morning and afternoon Stuff quiz. This is a daily tradition and a good quick break for my brain during work.

I am making a spreadsheet with all the records relating to property maintenance for a file I am working on. I review documents that have been provided by lawyer on the other side and enter any important information relating to the property. I chip away at this task until around 5.30 pm.

5.45 PM

At the end of my day, I check my emails one last time and read any updates relating to any files I am working on. I re-arrange my to do list and line up my tasks for the next day. I say goodbye to my team, and I will walk to the gym to get ready for a strength session.

6.15 PM

I will get changed and start my strength session. I will stay at the gym for around and hour and a half before showering and walking for about 10 minutes back home.
